Car ideas

How big are the kids? A hatch might get tight, but a golf should be OK for occasional use.

8, 5 and 2. Tbh the last car was an Astra and they all fit in although it was a good job the eldest was skinny being in the middle

I don't think a 3 litre straight six is enough to change the fact thats a 13 year old original model 1 Series for 8 grand.

No thanks.

Be half the price it that engine was in a 3 Series and its hard to argue it isn't a better car, either.

2 car seats and a third child in the middle will be real tight.
Agreed, specially as the children will be growing. Personally I would be going for salon or a larger coupe if that takes your fancy. But if you think a golf is large enough, that’s up to you and you are the best judge for your own needs.

Each to their own , Jason Barker tend to be a tad pricier due to their service and quality of cars. They don’t struggle to sell either :)

At this budget, the best Skoda Octavia or Superb you can find?
Advantage the Octavia vRS would have here is that this budget or a touch more could get you into an MQB based Mk3 without it being too leggy, whereas I'm not sure you'd get into a decent example of the equivalent Golf GTD/GTI, you'd probably be looking mostly at the Mk6.

The quicker they grow the quicker they’re out of the child seats so they would all fit fine!
As mentioned though, this isn’t the family car, I just don’t want to put myself in a position only having four seats and I needed to get the family in it. The likelihood is that they they never would.

You can't make a thread like this and then settle for a golf. A few days in you will regret it.

:D
I’m a bit too old and sensible to go for some of the suggestions here. Some look like a money pit just for fuel!

The Insignia VXR for example, I had the 2.0 version for 4 years and it was great but the thought of paying 500’quid for tax alone makes my eyes water.

I know what you mean mate, my oldest is now out her boaster seat, just one more to go. I had to give up on one car, due to space with the car seat etc and that wasnt the family car either, I learnt the hard way.

I know buddy its a minefield.
Arrange some test drives of a few cars and see how you like them.

As said already, it’s a minefield sometimes. Have you considered going for a JDM car? Sometimes you get a decent car performance wise and they will be in a cheaper tax bracket. But the compromise might have to pay a bit more for the fuel and it will be an older car. A Civic type R was mentioned earlier, you can get a Honda Accord Euro R for the sort of money your talking about? I know this one is no longer available, but just thought you’d get a good idea.
