Hello chaps

I passed in April 2016. However, can I drive 'regular' vans with this license i.e. Ford transit, Merc Vito size?

Thanks

No you need CPC if between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes. It's just a video and multiple question exam. If you passed before 1997 you could drive up to 7.5 tonnes but still needed CPC do drive commercially.

But you will need CPC regardless for between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes.

After 7.5 you need class 2 / 1.

Oh, that's disappointing. So even to drive a normal sized ford transit I'll need CPC?

If you didn't already know, remember:

50mph on single carriageway roads.
60mph on dual carriageway roads.
70mph only on motorways.

Many people get caught out if they don't usually drive a van.

That true ?

i always see vans doing 60+ on a normal single carriageway

Sorry, but this is clearly nonsense.

If the van is white with a duct tape union jack on the bonnet: 80mph 1 inch from your bumper.
If the van is black or silver with a Mercedes badge: 90+
If the van has a 'limited to 70mph' sticker - then expect to find them exclusively in the outside lane

Yes, up to 3.5t you use your normal category b license and have no need for the - frankly pointless - driver CPC.

Unfortunately this was forced on us law abiding commercial drivers by good old Brussels, bless 'em  :p  because of the drivers & operators who have scant regard for the law as regards drivers hours, daily checks and vehicle maintenance.
I don't have a problem spending 7 hours a year in a 'classroom' as there are new traffic laws coming through all the time & I have learned a lot over the last 10 years of CPC.

Most definitely THIS. :D ;) Though they get tailgated too

Best way to make sure idiots in BMW's don't pull out on you is to drive a battered old transit.

Quoted for truth^^^^^

Be ready for more lane blocking as the EU are moving ever closer to bringing vans under 3.5t into the scope of drivers regs. If that happens most vans will have a tacho fitted and most likely limited to 110kph/68mph.

As for CPC.....

It's nothing but another tax on workers, and most of those that teach it are failed drivers spouting the usual RDC waiting room nonsense like £100 fine for every turn of the handle that your landing legs are not wound up, or chalking the tyres if you run out of duty time on a loading bay.
There is no test, no way to fail, if you sleep your way through the 35 hours of tedium you'll get your card the same as anyone else.
Like most government organised schemes, it's a costly farce with zero benefit.

Looking at the expiry date of your license has suddenly made me feel very old! :o :D

I've driven a LWB rental from Enterprise, they didn't tell me I couldn't when they checked my license?

The standard UK driving license covers category B, which enables the holder to drive any vehicle weighing up to 3,500kg (3.5 tonnes). Whether this vehicle is a car with up to eight passenger seats or a van simply does not matter, they didn't tell you because you can drive a van LWB or otherwise.

It is once you go over 3500Kg in Gross Vehicle Weight that it gets more complicated. :)

Category B1 is quite confusing. The icon is clearly supposed to be a van, but the actual category definition is more like a quad bike. Weird.
