Buying a 2nd hand GPU waterblock

Leak test it for a while (at max foreseeable pressure) before putting power on the GPU, lots of blue paper towel to spot any leaks.

Great, will do, thank you. I haven’t got any other part of the loop, so have to get that together first! But the GPU block I’ve been looking for has come up for sale on eBay so I’m just going to grab it while I can.

Np. There's also the option of checking the o-ring seals and the condition of any acrylic/perspex window, but you'd need to take it apart - you could nick the seal or over tighten it when reassembling. A good flush should suffice unless it's really clogged.

I like to use blue paper towels for checking leaks as the water shows up much easier than white towels. Saved me once when I had a push-fitting fail!

I suppose flushing it would be the best first step - with the blue towel - and then I can see if there are any problems and decide whether or not to reassemble it.

I know it’s missing the screws and the thermal pads, but hopefully my card had the screws and I can deal with thermal pads some other way..,

Just make sure theyre the correct screws. The ones holding your GPU air cooler on may differ to the ones for the waterblock. They often come with plastic washers and standoffs too.

Since you are going to get all the other
Parts too
Once you get a pump you can test the gpu
Block with it outside the pc for leaks
Before even attempting to put it on
The gpu

Thanks for the tip. It'll be some time before I get everything else. I'm also weighing up how much of the PC I should upgrade. It's rather old but it still runs most games fairly well, and that would only be enhanced by water cooling.

I've got a 2500k running at 4.4 GHz (I think) and an overclocked MSI GTX 970.

Which msi version card?
Got a msi gtx970 g4 gaming block on the shelf here
If you're really lucky I might have saved the screws for it when I put the original
Cooler back on it
Assuming that's the version you have

That is the version I have. If you have the screws that would be awesome!
Will dig through the cupboard for the gpu box
If you're lucky I might have put the screws back in the box
Though can't promise anything I am not an organised person lol
Will let you know by tomorrow at the latest
Did you already buy the block?

Thanks buddy :) no rush though - as I say, the block is all I have (or will have).

Yes, I bought the block. It's probably in the post at the moment.

That Was a really good card far as I remember
Think I put a modded bios on mine once it was watercooled
And a nice hefty overclock

A modded BIOS? How...what even is that? I want it!

It is a really good card, particularly considering it only has 4GB RAM on it (I think 3 is VRAM).

It's held up really well for a number of years now, as has my processor.

With the processor I'm thinking that I may buy the best LGA1155 that's still out there instead of upgrading properly.

The thing that keeps going round in my head is a. I can't afford to buy essentially a whole new system. And b. but if I'm buying a new CPU and a new MB to go mini-ITX, I may as well just get all new stuff...
