NVIDIA ‘Ampere’ 8nm Graphics Cards

My logic although flawed is my 2080 at 8GB VRAM.. so its gimped.. so might as well upgrade to the 3080 with 2GB more VRAM and superior speed, and sell my 2080 whilst its worth something... or am I being silly?

I don't class rdr2 as poorly optimised? It's the only game in years I've played that had a wow next gen moment for me

Maybe consider that never cards are just better than your 1080Ti? 2080S ran RDR2 at mostly high settings and got 60-75 FPS in game at 5Mp Res.

I heard the 1080Ti was down at 40fps or so.

It's just ageing is all and it's ok. It's a legend of a card sure but has its limits.

I have an RTX 2080.. not a 1080ti. and It definitely wasn't playable at 4k/60fps without severe compromises on the settings.. and even then.. wasn't great.

Maybe you have a magical 2080 super.

So you have to upgrade again. :p

I mean it might not be an issue for me

I have a 100hz 1440 ultrawide freesync
So I probably don't need to worry.

But future proofing man. The future!

To be honest, I'm out of the hardware loop. No idea what is important, let's say I get into vr

Maybe I can get away with the 3070?

the more you buy the more you save, come on you know this :p

It's hard to say. Is the extra of the 3080 worth the extra cost for you? Do you care about texture quality & streaming settings? etc. Clearly the 2080 isn't quite enough at 4K for max settings and the like, so maybe the missing vram is a moot point. With a 77" OLED I sure as hell wouldn't be settling though, but I'd wait for the variants with more VRAM (which are 100% on their way). You already have a 2080 and it's not like you are without a GPU and the selling cost of that will not crater more than it already has today.

Very good point. I think the best thing for me to do is probably wait for a game to turn up that I want to play.. which the 2080 will struggle with.

I just REALLY want to start using the HDMI 2.1 features :D

What headset? But for VR VRAM is even MORE important because it uses more of it & usually you want to supersample.

I wouldn't worry about VR. I can't think of many VR games on the horizon which are going to push the envelope. We'll probably be looking at the NEXT nvidia refresh before we get VR games which push the enevelope :D.

I like the look of the pailt for £630 what do you guys think of it?

It's £639 not £630, and for a tenner more for the Zotac Trinity, you get a better looking card (IMO), an extra THREE years warranty, with a metal front and rear backplate.

You would have to be off your rocker to buy the Palit over the Zotac.

Aren’t we being a bit harsh on 2080Ti owners with all these comments about “...shoulda sold your card weeks ago” etc.

Was there really any guarantee that the 3000-series would seemingly offer such an improvement? Not really, especially after the damp squib of the 2000-series launch.
One damp squib of a launch does not undo the fact that the vast majority of Nvidia GPU launches have been very good. If your only experience with PC GPU hardware launches is the Turing launch then yes, maybe that would be the impression you get, but if you have been an enthusiast for several generations then it was pretty clear in combination with all of the leaks and rumours that Ampere would be a big deal vs Turing.

I haven't got one but it might be in my pipeline. As in it needs to be considered.

I wouldn't worry. My 2080 with HLA does absolutely fine and thats with some super sampling. There aren't many demanding games on the horizon. The HP Reverb might push the limits a bit but review reports have shown a 2080ti more then cuts the mustard on those games so a 3080 should blast through them.

As awesome as VR is, we don't have AAA graphical fidelity because we don't have AAA developers fully invested in the platform so we don't have AAA demands on games. The biggest developer is Oculus who produce for the weakest headsets. There is no way they're going to therefore push the boundaries of VR when they need their games to work on the bargain basement of PCVR headsets, the Rift S, and the portable snapdragon Oculus Quest.

and games which are demanding are usually poorly optimised pieces of crap like Asgard's wrath (you can literally see pop in everywhere... and its not GPU bound.. its how the game was initially coded).
