Is NVIDIA sabotaging their own Ampere launch?

2GB GDDR6X chips do not exist. So the only way to do a 20GB 3080 now is with 3090 type design. £££

16GB 3070 can however be done simply with the existing PCB.

thought the 3080 and 3090 boards were identical as well?

even if they aren’t it’s pretty easy to use a 3090 reference board to make a 20gb 3080 super vard

October 2021 maybe :).
I really don't see NV launching the Super versions so soon and it's easy to make an assumption there will be one, rightly or wrongly. I think people often have an agenda when releasing rumours

I'm snagging one either way, before some filthy miner gets it. Worst case I'll sell it off & buy a different variant later.
This - I would rather do this than sit around watching the rumour mill waiting for the card I want to be released. These cards are gonna be sold out till chrimbo so at least I can enjoy the new tech whilst waiting for the right card to be released. I don't mind couple of hundred hit if I flip the card

My thought process too.

Grab a 3080 now and ride it out until better cards arrive.

If stock is as short as people say it is, I shouldn’t lose too much money when I switch.

Doesn't really matter to me as the 20gb 3080 will cost more anyway and my limit is £650 so it wouldnt even be on my radar.

With the rumour of a 3080 20GB card came a rumour of a $1000 price tag, so seeing as the dollar mostly seems to move to £ in rip off Britain is the extra memory going to be worth an extra £300 - 350 ?

I made the descision today that I am going to wait.
I was 100% sure I was buying a 3080. But I dont need one right now. and It makes sense to wait until

a. proper reviews are out
b. full stacks are out
c. AMD are out.

so I am going to wait.

Will probably end up going for 3080S / Ti.

They arent going to just release a 3080 with more memory. They will bump cuda and clocks too and make it a Ti or super. In which case yes, it could be worth

Why not, we've had identical GPUs with differing memory amounts before.

Would actually make sense as it satisfies the demand from those who want more VRAM whilst not ******* off those who've already bought a 3080 as it won't perform any better if they're not making use of the extra memory.

If you hadn't noticed by all the 2080Ti memes... They really don't care about how people who have bought previous cards feel.

Just a theory / me thinking out loud.

Logically NVIDIA is not going to want people buying AMD cards or the games consoles over their cards (which is AMD as well).
They have a market share and stock price to protect.

So IF RDNA2 does end up offering better specs, value and performance than the 3070 and 3080 I can see NVIDIA wanting to counter that pretty damn quickly to salvage the holiday season and get back out in front again.

This is why I'm not sure.
It does kinda make sense that these variants could release sooner rather than later.
Don't know, I guess it all hangs on AMD and what they come up with. :-/

Haha. Jensen's marketing spell wore off it seems :p

I was going to wait until November myself and see what's what, but as I know I am going Nvidia, there is nothing likely to change between now and then, other than the prices going up, so I am buying it day 1 and enjoying it now :D

The --->rumours<--- of the RTX 3080 Super and a RTX 3070 Super just will not go away.
In my opinion this really throws into doubt if we should be buying their 8Gb and 10Gb cards at launch. :(

The 3070 Super stands to potentially get a small increase in CUDA / SM cores and 16Gb of the faster GDDR6X VRAM over the standard 3070.
(If true that card would be pretty damn awesome).

What are your opinions on this?

its about priced segments.
More ram means higher price.

amd might come along and steal all their thunder and offer more fps for less money

"Is Nvidia sabotaging their own launch"

Yes I think they are. They made a big reveal back on the 1st and didn't follow it up with immediate reviews. For me, the launch was exciting but they didn't sustain the momentum and now my excitement has subdued. If they'd have revealed the reviews immediately (obviously showing good results), then immediately the product, my interest would have been sustained and I'd have likely bought one. Now, the wait and lack of info has been boring and Im now considering waiting.

AMD's last gen (Navi 10 / RDNA v1) was a 9.7 TFlop GPU and was roughly equivalent to a RTX 2070 (7.4 TFlops). Note that Nvidia's RTX 2000 series seems to get more performance per TF.

A RTX 3090 clocked at 2.1Ghz is capable of 44 TFlops. RTX 3080 is 29.7 TFlops, but could do more with overclocking.

I kind of think the RTX 3090 should just come with 2.1Ghz clock frequency as standard, considering the £1400 price tag. Don't be a sucker if you buy one - Get the overclocked version.

I hate to p*ss on the excitement bonfire, but AMD would have to build a GPU that is 3 or 4 times more powerful than their 5700XT to really compete with Nvidia, probably with IPC improvements too.

AMD will be competing with just the RTX 3070 this year, that's fine. I think the RDNA 2 desktop GPU will have double the TF count of the PS5 GPU (10.2 TFlops)
