NVIDIA ‘Ampere’ 8nm Graphics Cards

Not so much sloppy, they knew exactly what they was doing, Clever marketing to an unsuspecting buyer.

A bit like when the law came out for ISPs to state up to Xmpbs for their internet speed.

They're basically covering their ass because they know it won't be twice as fast in everything.
They said "up to" first, then "twice the performance" second, not the other way around, which is why I think it's more of a sloppy use of terminology than a cover-up.
 
Because I'm an idiot can someone ELI5 please. The 3090 from what I've seen has lower clocks/boost clocks than the 3080, what exactly does this mean? Why is the more expensive card with more VRAM having less clock speed? I know it's not just this gen but I think it's a common thing? I could be mistaken. Thanks

3090 has better parts = more compute per clock, more vram throughput per clock. Lower clocks using better parts is common.

The 3090 has all the good stuff in it and is pretty much the best card nvidia can make, the 3080 is nerfed with less powerful parts but its parts can run at higher frequency.

Hmm yes maybe, I didn't realise it was the other way round lol.

Well the weekend to get through and we'll know by Monday hopefully what the real benches are in games is what I'm interested, I don't give a crap what synthetic benchmarks are lol.

Quake II RTX timedemo 1 will be a good gauge.
To my knowledge it's the only game that uses full global illumination. Yes, its 23 years old but if a 3080 can run Quake II RTX timedemo with full global illumination at 4k 60fps then most if not all games should work at 4k 60fps.
If it does then its a very powerful card and RTX hardware handles global illumination very well.

If you dont like the eye candy then it can of course be turned off, but if everyone said this all the time and turned off everything then they would be left with Pong :D

True, so use a game that has a standard benchmark built in. I thought then the idea is that if the benchmark runs good enough with whatever detail settings / resolution, you should be good to play the game with those settings.
Every game should have a standard benchmark program accessible in the options I think.
Adjust your settings and res, run it and get 30fps, 60fps 6000fps or whatever you are happy with then play the game with those settings

Haha, I've not been able to play any sort of quake rtx being on this 1080ti but I'll take your word for it, I'll be looking for the quake rtx benchmark now, that'd be interesting to see.

Quake 2 RTX will run on a 1080ti - it will just be a lot slower than 2000 and 3000 series cards - talking 30 FPS at 720p kind of performance.
 
That's true I just think some are getting carried away with synthetic we've seen so far which most of us know it means jack when it comes to gaming lol.

Yep totally agree. Couldn't give a fluff what synthetic numbers look like.

Ofc we all want real world gaming performance figures - FPS, thermals and noise :D
 
Think most of us are all saying "can't wait til Monday for actual reviews and FPS figures" but ok, just you 2 gents :D

It's the synthetic benchmarks I have no interest in, gaming benchmarks from actual games I'm all over like a bad rash!
