NVIDIA ‘Ampere’ 8nm Graphics Cards

Good point. Thanks Gerard.

So expectations are in real word performance.

a 3080 is 30% faster than a 2080TI...

and a 3090 is what.... 20-30% faster than a 3080?
(ish?)

Ok with each passing day... Im getting confoozed.

Wouldnt it make more sense for 2080 TI users to simply pick up another 2080TI on the cheap and SLI?
Surely that would be better performance than a single 3080?

Im sure I am missing something overly obvious here.

SLI is all but dead though.

Now that you have to pay three grand for the privilege of running whatever they call SLI now, if it is even that, what publisher/games studio is ever going to develop for it?

None, that's who.

Well, if my 2080Ti scores 15,905 on Timespy and the 3080 scores 17,828 (going by released benchmark results) I will have a guess that the 3070 is not going to beat the 2080Ti performance. No where near

Hopefully i'm wrong and this 30XX series is as good as all the hype. If it is i'll happily get a 3080...
However, it's catch 22. If the hype is true then the prices will quickly jump to £900+ for a 3080. If not, people have thrown £650 blindly into something that is not that great

Maybe I'll just sit tight with my 2080Ti and wait for the 40XX series. I have a 100hz monitor so its not like the extra frames above 90fps make a difference. Could also just get a PS5 instead :D

This isn't quite true. You can actually run multiGPU without needing Nvlink/SLI support in DX12. Hell, you can even mix&match AMD+Nvidia GPUs if you want. Problem is - almost no game devs will put in the work for <1% of the playerbase. But all the groundwork is there for when they do decide to do it (if they decide to do it). I don't think the '20s are mGPUs' decade either sadly.

So you think SLI is alive and kicking then?

Even though you have to spend £3000 for it?

OK.

If it overclocks well then 30% should be possible. If not, then not.

3080 would need to hit almost 21k in Timespy to be 30% faster than an overclocked 2080Ti, so about a 17% overclock on 3080 default.

Hopefully someone will get a 3070, overclock it and break 16k in Timespy. I'll believe the media / Nvidia hype then

I don't know who worded the last part. Whether that was TPU or Nvidia, but if it's already being downplayed as a high refresh 1440p card then it doesn't seem so amazing at £480 all of a sudden.

I mean look, any one who has chased the 4k dragon knows 8gb simply isn't enough for now, let alone future gen titles. We also know M$ are aiming for 4k 60 in a console (a whole machine with a 1tb NVME in !) for £450. All of a sudden Nvidia's promising doesn't sound so good to me.

Ahh the make sense Andy is back for now! :) Agree as the Turing lineup could cater for the 1440p, if the 3000 cant offer some 4k gaming then its not really a bargain at all and just hype over nothing.

God yeah and it'll be hilarious if all of those 2080TI's that have been sold cheap... there could be a lot of cheesed off 280ti owners... I reckon right now, some people are having second thoughts and may well take thei 2080TI's off fleeeebay

Nvidia catered for SLI on the higher end cards, like someone said earlier its the devs that need to make the games take advantage of mult-gpu setups.

If the difference is about 2000 points in Timespy I dont think its worth getting a 3080 over a 2080TI. Thats potentially nearly £1800 gone to get a score of 17000-18000 in Timespy which is one way of looking at it.
Probably turn out an overclocked 2080ti is just about near a 3080 default clocked card. I've gone (2000 points) that much gain with cards in the past in 3DMark and the difference has been a little underwhelming for the cost of the outlay. Ideally you want something that you can actually notice as an improvement in the games you like to play not just what the figures or fps says.

Waiting can be sensible and wallet friendly.

I'm not sure I'll bother upgrading if the 3080 is under 30% faster than my 2080 Ti - my nephew no longer needs a GPU. I'd have to go to the 3090 to get a meaningful upgrade.

That's not a bad strategy either... the 40xx will be close to GA100 (currently available as a 300w tdp Tesla) transistor count of 54 billion roughly 2x the rtx 3090... which could potentially more than triple the throughput of 3090.. it's something we should have got this generation.. but anyhow, it's a trade-off between time and money. Are you willing to wait that long?.. Also there's Intel xe launch sometime in 2021, and their offer is looking good at least on paper

At my rez (3440x1440) I wouldn't consider upgrading if I had a 2080 Ti.

In fact, if the price gouging continues with the 3080, buying a s/h 2080Ti at the right price will be something I'll be looking at.

Correct I would only ditch the 2080Ti if I had another high end display that really needed it. Its looking like the 3080 will be good if you owned a mid-range/vega or say a 980Ti.
