EV general discussion

If people generated their own electricity and had it limited then they could complain, but mostly they don't and they rely on infrastructure that cost billions upon billions to build and run. I wonder why they don't complain (well some do) when fossil fuel prices increase due to supply/demand balance, they just pay the extra and get on with it, oh and because they are just used it it.

You would think it was the end of the world, but as we are trying to ensure a certain amount of reliability in a situation where massive change is taking place then it is important to have a safety mechanism that can be deployed as and when required. Harks back to the why do we have to have a seat belt when I have never had an accident type people/times.

Going back to self generation, I think the fact most people don't realise that things like solar and battery storage will become just the standard, like gas central heating, or double glazing, or lets go back as far as an electricity supply! Crazy huh? Things change but people now they have the internet to complain and misunderstand and rant on, not just whining over the fence to their neighbours.

If we all went fully electric how many more power plants will we need?

Don't worry the National grid have people paid to consider these sort of questions :)

Seriously though have a look at the series of Plug Life videos on YT that covers things like CO2 emissions of EVs over their lifetime, cost comparisons to ICE, how we can tax EVs fairly and the above question.

Glut of studies around you can google, I tend to ask my mate at the National grid aswell. Post Covid might charge a lot of the inputs to such studies though!

That doesn't mean the government actually listen to the paid people.

If they did we wouldn't be building things like HS2. Which no one actually wants or needs.

National Grid is independent of the government.
National Grid are stuck in the middle of the political circle.
  • Ofgem, their regulator has the end consumer in mind - i.e. Controlling fuel costs and therefore peoples bills.
  • The Government just want the necessary infrastructure built :p
  • National Grid won't build anything without 'agreement' from Ofgem that they can claim their investment back.

Looks like my Polestar 2 has arrived in the UK and waiting on a handover booking now! Just booked my installation of an Anderson Charge Point which is looking about 6 weeks. Luckily there are council provided free to use fast chargers within walking distance of my house!
How did you decide to go for that charger?

The billions upon billions to build that infrastructure didn't come out of thin air, it is paid for by those customers.

I'm sure there would be plenty of complaints if we had a situation where you turn up at a petrol station to be told you're not allowed to fill up today because the petrol is needed elsewhere! Sure, that is acceptable in an emergency/wartime scenario, but not as a day-to-day situation

This looks very interesting, it's just 'a car' that happens to be electric.

Good range, charging speed and space for a pretty reasonable price, think they'll start from £24,499 which makes it no more expensive than an ICE car in the same segment, pretty much the same as a Golf estate.

True, however the ICE MG5 do start at £15k so need to go in eyes open you are getting an MG, not a Golf.

Albeit an MG which will cost you £15-20/month in fuel rather than £150-200 ;)

Liking the look of these as a potential replacement for the Zoe in a couple of years - could do with the extra space & range, but can't see myself going back to an ICE if I can help it!

I keep wondering if a plug in hybrid offers the best of both worlds, silent zero emissions local trips and a proper enjoyable engine for further afield. The new BMW 545e looks really interesting indeed. Can't wait to try one.

I agree although I still think for the majority we ditch the engine actually doing the driving and instead install a maximum efficiency engine for charging, can be optimised to run at a certain revs.

I can see the demand from the other perspective as well, a longer range version which is as you say has a small range of EV for the local type trips.

The issue is whether its worth investing that much into the stop gap, no matter how much some dont want it, the future isnt diesel/petrol, right now its electric (subject to change if someone can work out another viable alternative)
PHEV or DHEV could certainly be a decent stop gap, and for many would go some way to breaking the range anxiety, or the, but once a year I need to drive 400 miles so a 150mile range EV wouldnt work for me crew

So ignoring VED & servicing costs, the fuel savings pay for the difference after ~5 years? That doesn't seem unreasonable, plus the residuals may (or may not) be higher.

It would fail most investment appraisals. After 5 years it hasn't actually saved you anything yet. Plus are you really going to want to keep a cheap Chinese car for that long?

It's a car, not an investment, why does it need to save you anything? Over 5 years it's no more expensive than the ICE which is the point I was making.

I know which I would rather have
