Does anyone know if it is now possible on AMD CPU's? I know at one time you had to have an Intel CPU, a 4K Blu-ray player and compatible software. I've also read that GPUs can handle it instead but it's not entirely clear with all the DRM restrictions.

Cheers. Can you play back 4K Blu-ray discs? Are all the 3000 series CPUs capable of running 4K Blu-ray?
I have no Blu-ray ROM but there is no reason why I wouldn't be able to if I had one.
/\/\/\ officially not on AMD. Intel SGX is required along with AACS 2.0, and HDCP 2.2 as well for this, so you could buy an older 2nd hand Intel kaby lake setup & do it that way cheaply. There are workrounds for AMD, but to tell you how may be in breach for forum rules.

The film studios forced their hand & made 'wintel' do this for 4K UHD playback so it was too much of a faff for HTPC builders to build a dedicated rig for that purpose as well as not being cost effective. Most people want a 'set & forget' setup too rather than having to resolve an issue everytime an update broke their playback. Been down that road with 1080p blu-ray myself then I tried to build a rig capable of HD-DVD/blu-ray way back in 2008. It worked of sorts but I gave up in the end. Mainly to do with Cyberlink that was issuing updates to the software all the time, then stopping support & you had to buy the latest version to get continued support. PITA & Cyberlink have not got a penny out of me since.
That does explain the lack of adoption on PC. I'm heading back towards physical media as I find a lot of the streaming services of variable quality especially if, like me, your internet connection is not the best. There is also the matter of other versions available on physical, high quality, improved sound and your favourite films aren't suddenly going to get withdrawn or edited for PC or other reasons.

Playready 3 drm (4k netflix) works with the 3000 series APUs but not the 2000 series. I haven't tested it, but it was in the marketing.

Sound like you're on the same wavelength as me. I have bought a few digital films but you don't own then and can't access them if you don't subscribe. No doubt there's a get out clause too, whereby they can just shut the service down with no notice. I can forsee a resurgence in physical media in the same way vinyl has had a second life.

You can not even buy the single UHD disc mate, You are forced to buy and pay extra for the bluray and online copy. And UV was shut down who will pay for this 10yrs from now? No one will pay for the terrabytes needed so yes i predict like you they will be lost and you will not own them.
Second point, The disc has a superior quality and uncompressed. Thirdly when the internet is down how do you stream 4k media? Its really really dumb to not buy physical media and the way 35mm film works ia the resolution is about 6k. So if say you like the Matrix the UHD is a true 4k rip you like me might say this is a good investment because if they do say in 10yrs time an 8k version the chances are it will be an upsample from software and deep learning from the 4k master.
Very very few will get a true 8k master i suspect, So if you want something forever simply check real or fake 4k website and consult thier list of real or fake 4k. And guess what? Its also a scam because a lot of new films like the £99 Harry Potter 8 disc set are all fake apart from the first one. So they hold back on many new films by simply upsampling the bluray to 4k and they dupe buyers into thinking its real 4k. The scam is that this enables them at a later date to go back and remaster the 35mm negatives at real 4k or 8k and sell the boxset again for another £99. So this is why anything true 4k that is on the IMDB top 250 i will buy the physical UHD because its the best thing to do as a consumer. When paired with a 2020 OLED screen we are in my opinion at the peak of cinema for the format 8k will be perfection but 4k is close enough for me.

Yes I've become aware of the take 4K recently. Apparently CGI causes a lot of issues and it's normally done at 2K and upscaled due to huge rendering times and cost. I was reading that you can get up to 16K equivalent from film but I'm presuming that will be 70mm or similar sized negatives.
The biggest issue with 4K seems to be whether or not they will do a transfer. Fortunately they're now getting to an age where the studio's are being forced into it as the film stock ages. There are a lot of boutique companies putting out some decent transfers too.
The internet service is a good one as it can quite variable and as shown recently the streaming services can turn down the quality. We had terrible banding on GOT in the final season and that was just at 1080p. I'm building up my 4K collection steadily. You can get some good buys if you shop around. I generally pick them up around £10, either secondhand or sales. Anything I'm not as bothered by I buy the Blu-ray, often as cheap as £1. A new TV is planned once I'm of furlough and I'm sure I've still got a job!
Yea Dark Knight Trilogy will get remastered i think, The 70mm film is indeed 16k i think but 35mm they say maxes out at 6k so thats all the early cinema covered. And as you say its really bad to watch Game of Thrones where the night scenes were ruined by compression and had we all of waited we could get the entire 4k boxset. It is like watching Zulu on VHS and i recently saw it uncompressed on a tiny OLED screen and its stunning its literally amazing and i cannot wait for the 4k.
You probably buy from Zaavi too then as well, The two for £15 or for £20 is what i also buy but Trilogys in real 4k i buy now like Matrix, Rambo, Dark Knight and X Men.

Titanic coming as well that and Jaws will look amazing the Zulu rip has amazing camerawork too you will maybe notice the superior camerawork they did with almost static shots. Try comparing it to say 4k Braveheart the film is good but the constant cut cut cut battle scenes are simply awful and make me feel like i have no focus point for my eyes and thus sort of nausea inducing.
So i am extremely excited that as you said they might have to 4k scan classic cinema simply to preserve it. I bet the costs and risk of storing 35mm film is more than the 4k scan. I think 35mm film is a fire hazard too!

Going back to the PC playback thing. I'm going to ditch the whole idea and get a Panasonic 4K player. Less complication, full bitrate, HDR10, Dolby Vision, Atmos and watch straight from disc. To much faff to be ripping and setting up servers, backups, buying more hardware etc. Keep it simple
