I bought an RTX 3080 for 1080p gaming!

Yes, stuttering drives me crazy. I prefer smoothness over resolution. Thats another good reason! No doubt a higher res screen looks better but it really breaks the immersion if it stutters. Shouldn't be a problem for the 3070 now at 1080p but give it a few years and it will be.

If you really prefer smoothness over resolution you should do two things

Buy monitors with higher refresh rate because even if you don't reach the refresh rate it's still smoother than a 60hz one.
Buy freesync/Gysnc monitors, they are the ultimate in smooth.

If flight sims are your thing then you should consider a VR headset. Total Immersion.

Up to the user and circumstance. Most cases now 1080p=1440p in terms of performance due to bottle necks or very close to. However the graphical differences are quite large.

3x 1080p screens will be a doddle for the 3080 at 60fps.

Chances are the 3080 could do 3x1440p screens at 60hz. Probably worth testing with DSR which will give you a similar result and probably a free resolution bump.
Yes, it will run three 1080p screens easy for most games. Not all though! Most games dont support multiple monitors unless you use nvidia surround and that doesn't perform much different to having one big screen. If a game supports multiple monitors natively it is like it's rendering 3 different views. This is much more taxing than 1 wide view.

I was tempted to get three 1440p screens but they won't fit on my desk, would cost a lot more to get ones of comparable colour accuracy, and I think I may struggle to read them. It is also much more expensive if I want colour accuracy, 1440p and high refresh rate all in one screen.

Its all theory though until I get the 3080 in my PC and try it. All I know is that with the 1660 Super I currently have is not fast enough for xplane on 3-4 screens. It may be my CPU limiting it also, but I think I should be able to do better.

Its a stupid decision, but each to their own. Should have bought a better monitor.
Better depends on what you want it for. What makes you think my 1080p screens aren't good? They were not cheap. I had to make a decision between image quality, refresh rate, resolution, price, size, appearance and suitability for what I want to use it for. Gaming performance is not my only consideration. They are also used for work, photography and videography.

Also it makes sense to buy GPU first, as then your performance is never compromised. With the GPU that I chose I have the option to upgrade to 1440p later. I would probably need 32inch to be able to read it. I can't physically fit 3 of them on my desk but could replace centre one. Having said that I am not keen on having different resolution screens. I prefer them to all be identical.

It's a good decision - you evaluated your own needs & judged accordingly rather than what the collective foolishness of the Internet propagates. Plus, in just 2 years the 3080 will become a mid-range card at best, so it's not like it's so overpowered that you're gonna beast every game for years and years, especially with ray tracing. Enjoy!

Thank you for not being harsh in your comments.

I do though fully understand the comments implying it isn't a sensible purchase. Maybe it isn't right now for most games, but, well, its my choice to do so. Just like some people choose to buy 3080s from scalpers or buy 3090s when they aren't much faster than 3080s.

For flight sim I'd go VR, at least now your PC can handle it.
Yes, I may one day. Not ready to make the leap yet, as I don't think they are quite good enough. Maybe next generation. I have watched reviews by a couple of channels that use xplane and they both say that surround monitors is better than VR.

Thanks. Yes, I would like faster refresh rate monitors, and probably will upgrade at least the middle one at some point. I am happy with 60hz for now. I have never seen greater than 60hz and I want to keep it that way until I am ready to purchase something that will display that. Once I have seen it I know I will want it. Haha.

I bought a chicken for my dinner and it was yum.

Seriously, if you are happy bud, that is all that matters and no need to worry what others think :)

Call me stupid! Haha. Seriously though, is anyone else doing this?

My reasons and cool things about this decision (some of which I wouldn't have known at the time I ordered)

1) 3080 has more vram, and faster vram than 3070 and has about 50% more processing power so should last longer. I would guess 2-3 years more.
2) I have four 1080p screens and would like to play some titles on all 4 (particularly flight sims). This is same number of pixels as 4k. I recently bought them and so have no intention of upgrading for years. Anyhow, 1080p is about all my old eyes can see. Haha.
3) 3080 came with watchdogs which is £60 value (a game I wanted anyway). This makes the difference between the £650 I paid for Ventus 3080 and the 3070 Ventus (£570) only £20.
4) I don't intend to upgrade this GPU for many years. So I wanted the most powerful I could get within my budget (3090 is not good value IMHO)
5) I have a huge backlog of older games to finish so when this card is too slow for new games, I still have stuff to play.

Anyone else have any reasons (for and against) for buying a 3080 for 1080p? Interested to hear your thoughts. Flame me if you wish. Haha.

Don't worry about it, I got a 3090 strix oc for 1080p :p

I am too, i'm looking for higher frame rates and smoother gameplay over visual looks. I have always been this way since competitive gaming. I dont really play single player games mainly online shooters.

Good decision! You'll get excellent performance in any game (All ultra 60fps+) for the next year or two. MSFS 2020 should also look amazing and play at very decent fps.
You can NEVER have too much GPU power despite what some people believe and the argument that a 3080 should only be used at 1440 or 4K simply doesn't hold water as a 3080 can't maintain 60fps in MSFS2020, Watch Dogs:Legion, AC:Valhalla, RDR2 all ultra at 4K and almost certainly will be found lacking in some AAA games going forward at 4K.

I will be doing exactly the same OP!
3 x 144hz screens for racing/fps, VR and streaming. Doing this with my 1080Ti does get dropped frames.

But I'm not putting myself on any waiting lists just now, I'll wait until I can actually buy one and get it shipped straight away.
