Hello. So I’m soon to have a 3090 with an x570 motherboard and was wondering as my current riser cable is 3.0 is it worth upgrading my riser cable to a 4.0 one. Thanks in advance.

Yes. People have had problems with PCIe v4 cards like the 3090 when connected to PCIe v4 motherboards by a v3 riser cable. Usually easily resolved by disabling PCIe v4 in the BIOS, but it's still an embuggeration. And then there's the issue of the x8 slot. If you have that occupied then you'll halve the bandwidth to the x16 slot.

Performance diffrence is from 0 to 5 % depending on game and resolution.

Ok thanks both. Due to the sheer size of the gpu I’m only able to install via a riser cable. Do you know of any 4.0 riser cables that are of a well known brand. Can’t find any apart from an unknown brand on Amazon. Thanks

Good spot. Just as well I hadn’t ordered it. I guess I will have to look at the Amazon one as that’s the only one available at the minute with pcie 4.0. Either that or just see how I get on with my current riser cable and card. Thanks both

PCIe v4 has lot tighter requirements for signalling, seriously limiting trace length on PCB without signal retimers "to amplify" signal.
So doubtfull that there will be much of passive riser cables.

Even that one seems to have very careful wording - the latest text is clear about only working with Nvidia GPUs...

Yeah your right just been on there website. Seems to me like it’s probably no better than my phanteks premium cable that I have. Hopefully when I get a waterblock I will be able to fit it straight into the pcie slot rather than using the riser cable.

PCIe gen 4.0 isn't really needed for the latest generation of 3000 series cards, but if you're adamant then the brand I'd recommend is Linkup. Their 4.0 risers often go on sale

i emailed Linkup direct about their risers.

The are releasing an updated version of their Extreme pcie4.0 sometime next month so gonna wait for that... plus i specifically need a riser longer than 40cm in length, and are able to bend 180degrees, so will have to test Linkups offering when they are relased

i have the v3 riser card when playing games i get werid glitching even when BIOS is set to PCI3.0 only, PC will randomly reboot with a VGA crash sometimes on latest BIOS too same no matter which version i try.

I think the RTX 3080 im running really wants the PCI 4.0 riser .... I cant find it in the UK though >>> Lian LI PW-PCI-420

This is what you are looking for, thinking of picking one up myself.

with riser cables, resizeable BAR or smart memory access is not possible. i found out the hard way! PC won't boot if you enable Re-BAR and with riser cable attached

Im using a 3090 on a Phanteks cable with 3.0 forced in the BIOS of an X570 Tomahawk. No issue, and no performance degradation. With Resize BAR enabled.

Mine works fine with re bar enabled in bios. Not had a single issue with my gen 4 riser cable. That post was from a while ago.
