"Pay as you drive"

Seems like a great idea to me. They should have different price tarrifs depending on what features you use. Ie listen to music while driving is an extra 10p per mile. And maybe have certain areas behind a pay wall. Access the town centre for £50.

He should really collaborate with EA on this, I'm sure they could give him so ideas on pay to play and dlc.

I think there are two main perspectives.

The first is that why on Earth do people need to think about another thing in life - it adds to stress and is another way of being taxed.

However, as a country, we're comparatively poor when it comes to using public transport. We drive everywhere, all the time. To change this mindset, we're going to need to be coerced into changing, because it's unlikely that we will by choice.

Inevitable. There’s nearly £40bn/year that needs to be recouped. How else could it be done? You could tax based on list price or vehicle weight, but that won’t raise enough from heavy users like you’d want.

Hands up every EV owner who said EV was the future as it's much cheaper than petrol who didn't see this coming :(

It's generally understood in the EV world that the current economics are expected to change over time.

Considering I pay £330 per year in road tax and drive a couple of thousand miles (this year I've done about 500!) which is mostly motorway and countryside A roads, the current system is a joke. They'd have to try really hard to make it worse for me.

It's pretty much the major argument in favour in some quarters...

For now yes. Not in 10 or 20 years time.

Either way, ahead of the actual ban (and possibly after it too) government fiscal policy, in whatever forms it takes, will ensure drivers are encouraged to drive EV.

No you don't

One of my concerns with this (doesn't affect me personally or I wouldn't be driving V6s LOL) is that some people on very low wages have to do a lot of driving and it will hit them hard unless it is in some way scaled (assuming it ends up costing more than now) - with many of them having to travel at what would be peak times.

EDIT: I'd happily pay more per mile though if it meant better quality roads and the parking situation addressed so I'm not constantly dodging badly parked cars on A roads, etc.

Well they won’t make much with the new working from home trend :D

maybe they’ll implement a WFH tax to counteract

EVs being part of the "internet of things" can be tracked, not so much older cars. I cant see this ever really working.

Unless it will only be for motorways, but that will cause more problems than it solves (people avoiding motorways).

But we already pay enough tax in this country...

They planned for £1.50 a mile last time they tried for it. Which is ridiculous.

What they are trying to do is force people on to public transport, but public transport is ****.
