EV general discussion

I do t think there will be any issues with classic cars but let’s be honest, they’ll be super niche just like they are now.

That said it will probably be socially unacceptable to drive one down your local high street.

I expect there is going to be one hell of a lot of offsetting going on come 2050 and no doubt all sorts of shenanigans going on with credits and adjustments/estimates to make the numbers work. Might as well throw in a bit of, X government didn’t do enough early enough for good measure.

Invest in woodland :p

The value of wood itself has gone up a lot and you can make deals as a carbon sink owner with morally loose companies that generate carbon dioxide to make claims of carbon neutrality.

Nah. It won't be any more socially unacceptable than it is now. You can literally hear people saying 'Jeebus, what's that racket?' and then they turn and when they see it's not a yoof in a broken exhaust scooby they smile at me in my funny little car with it's ludicrously loud V4 exhaust note, dumping out more soot than a diesel.

Lets be absolutely clear, the overall environmental impact of my SAABs is the same as it was in 1970 and 1973. It's far better to keep them running than to scrap them and recycle them into something else.

I'm all for classic cars, but they're not mainstream. I love cars with carbs and cb distributors that I can set up myself without a ton of gear. I've owned quite a few in my 50 years of driving.

You can come and set up my 1970 V4 if you like it that much. It's got a pair of Weber 40 DCOE carburettors on it and they're a royal pain to tune.

Nothing wrong with a nice car making a nice sound...

It's the 50 year olds having a mid life crisis with their barried up Ford KAs with baked bean tin exhausts who insist on revving them at all hours of the day and night who do my head in *glares at neighbour*

If anyone wants a cheap iD3, Drive the Deal are advertising 13.5% discount this morning. Which seems odd considering VW claim they’re sold out.

Probably to make sure the order books keep filling up, as a lot of people when hearing it's 'sold out' will just buy an alternative - this will encourage them to commit to an ID3 and wait instead.

I haven’t looked at this deal specifically but usually with the EVs the headline “discount” is actually the £3k government grant off list.

No, it’s that plus a chunk. And apparently VW are generously guaranteeing the price (even after 31/12/20) if you put down a deposit before 2/12/2020. Wow! Isn’t that generous of them. Not.

I suspect the word is out. Buy an iD3, get stuck on your drive.

My Polestar was meant to be delivered on Tuesday next week but has been pushed back till Thursday :(

Just ordered a 32A Three Phase lead, unlike most I will not be charging at home at all unless I really screw up, instead I will be charging at work and public free stations where possible.

I think if I play it right, I'll barely ever pay a penny towards running the vehicle except maybe a set of tyres!

Mostly what I do. I've a 7kW at home but tbh semi-regret it, it's there in an emergency and the few times I have charged at home it's been overnight where a 3-pin would have got the job done (albeit over a longer period, but still ready for the morning). The benefit/offset is when I've been able to charge at 0p/kW or less, but it'll still take ages to recoup the install cost.

Retail parks in Northampton have free 7kw chargers, as do the Tescos in Milton Keynes etc.

I work in an office with a 7kW 5 days a week, so I can charge it as and when its needed, a working day should give me a full charge for 200 miles. I have a 13-Pin plug at the house but I live in a 1st Floor Flat where my electricity is included, I don't want to take the mick as it's ran by family members, I have no accurate way to compensate them for the energy I take over and above the normal usage.

There's also a 50 or 150kW charger at Milton Keynes which is free

Do they have a time limit? All the free chargers near me start charging £10 an hour after 3 hours.
The one in MK is bugged, it's meant to charge but it doesn't.

Also, three hours is absolutely suitable and enough really. I'm probably going to be charging at Tesco and giving me enough miles for the journey there and back which cancels out that journey, I think for me ultimately unless I drive a couple of hundred at a weekend I'm going to be fine.

You may have better knowledge than I, but there's a 22kW (apparently) at Rushden Lakes in Northampton which is apparently free to use? So if I pre-condition the battery I could in theory get 70 miles in a couple hour shopping trip?

When I got an electic car, there were a load of free chargers. The ones that were unlimited went to paid, and the ones that were free went to time limited.

It's more the ball ache of having to unplug your car after 3 hours. I used to charge mine overnight in a public car park near to the hotel I stayed at. Instead, I had to plug in the evening, then go for a walk and unplug it after 2.5 hours, and move the car (the car park was free overnight otherwise).

Seems free to me, not saying I'll rely on it but it's pretty cool

There is free car parking available for visitors for up to five hours.
Make sure you don't get caught out by their ANPR scameras. You can't leave it there all day while you're at work, you'd have to move it during lunch.
