EV general discussion

The one in MK is bugged, it's meant to charge but it doesn't.

Also, three hours is absolutely suitable and enough really. I'm probably going to be charging at Tesco and giving me enough miles for the journey there and back which cancels out that journey, I think for me ultimately unless I drive a couple of hundred at a weekend I'm going to be fine.

You may have better knowledge than I, but there's a 22kW (apparently) at Rushden Lakes in Northampton which is apparently free to use? So if I pre-condition the battery I could in theory get 70 miles in a couple hour shopping trip?

If you can charge at 11kW/hr then in 2 yours you’ll get 22kW which will be 66 (3 miles/kW) to 110 (5 miles/kW) miles.

If you’re on Polar then the fast chargers are 15p/kW and if you’re on Pod Point the fast chargers at Lidl are 23.5p/kW. If you have anything VendElectruc near you then that’s usually 12p/kW but they’re all AC as far as I’m aware.

No, it’s that plus a chunk. And apparently VW are generously guaranteeing the price (even after 31/12/20) if you put down a deposit before 2/12/2020. Wow! Isn’t that generous of them. Not.

Actually, that's more of an important factor than it first looks. Regardless of whether we get an FTA with the EU or not, there are potentially some serious price increases coming for many EVs. The issue is that the batteries and motors are not made in the EU and thus those EVs do not qualify as being made sufficiently in the EU to count as EU-built. So, even if there is zero-tariff on imports of EU-built vehicles, this may not apply to many EVs and thus they may get a 10% tariff. Anything built in the UK or outside the EU (e.g. Leaf) should not be affected as much. However, the Leaf may be affected by a c.3.5% tariff on imported parts however.

However, in a note from BMW, seen by Fleet News, the German manufacturer has announced a customs duty related increase of more than £3,000 on the recommended retail pricing (RRP) of the BMW i3, irrespective of whether there is a free trade deal or not.

The current RRP for a BMW i3 (ZI3I), valid until December 31, is £35,120 – the previously announced RRP, to be effective from January 1, was £35,670. However, BMW says that the new RRP from January will now be £38,785 – an increase of more than £3,600.

£38k for an i3!

Makes a mode 3 sound cheap at £45k given how much more car you get and the 10% tariff is already included.

That's an i3 without options. They're a lot more than that in reality. Seen in those terms, Tesla is actually quite good value. Only the M3 Performance starts to look a bit overpriced when you consider that for £6500 you're getting 20" wheels and tyres, Brembo brakes, stiffer suspension, a bit of carbon fibre stuck on the boot lid and a software mod to unleash all the power.

I'm confused, 11kW/hr, is that what you'd get on a 22kW? It's new to me :p

But yeah those are free except the 5hr parking so if I go there for a coffee and a shop at a weekend and the 22kW is free, I could in theory get say 60 - 100 miles dependant on how long I charge and how I drive...

What car do you have? I was under the impression it was a Polestar 2 which has an onboard 11kW AC charger. So it won’t charge faster than that.

You're correct I'm being stupid and misinformed, the Pod Point website suggests it has a 22kW charger but EV Database suggests otherwise.

I'm not going to bother getting a proper home charger installed yet.

I rent and am planning to buy a house next year so will leave it until then. In the meantime I can just do the 3 pin charge through my letter box, plus i'm quite lucky that there's a council-run car park quite close to my house with 3 hours free parking for EV's and a 50KWh charger. It's a 10 minute walk back.
