EV general discussion

Love these two guys - pushing car design and engineering forward. Also, the Polestar Precept looks amazing and is in production.

Polestar and Koenigsegg

You're right, the Kona and eNiro are vastly superior.

That's what I was getting at.

TBH the Zoe is probably the better comparator; similar size, more comparable range, etc. But after the price rise, and after adding options to equalise the spec, the i3 price almost double the Zoe's. A nicer car, for sure. But worth close to double? Nah...

Polestar just gave all P2 owners 12 months Polar-Plus membership and £450 worth of charging credit, that’s about 10k miles. Nice :)

I think it’s fair to say no one is paying RRP for an i3 or and BMW for that matter. Still doesn’t change it’s really quite expensive.
The i3 is small and lightweight with that rather special body which isn't cheap to manufacture. Also dealer network support and BMW build quality. My nearest Tesla service center is about 140 miles away and while the tech is further advanced than most other EV's I wouldn't trust American car build quality without a dealer nearby :)

Actually, that's more of an important factor than it first looks. Regardless of whether we get an FTA with the EU or not, there are potentially some serious price increases coming for many EVs. The issue is that the batteries and motors are not made in the EU and thus those EVs do not qualify as being made sufficiently in the EU to count as EU-built. So, even if there is zero-tariff on imports of EU-built vehicles, this may not apply to many EVs and thus they may get a 10% tariff. Anything built in the UK or outside the EU (e.g. Leaf) should not be affected as much. However, the Leaf may be affected by a c.3.5% tariff on imported parts however.

I don't think you were referring to the widely mentioned eu concern of UK trying to become a car assembly plant for europe ? do you have any articles on that issue ?

will this become the future appreciating ev classic - what will ? see they have sold ~10K lifetime , versus 25K+ so far for M3

It seems to me that the i3 chassis will be much harder to deal with then it comes to its end of life compared to just using steal or aluminium due to the amount of plastic involved. In that regard it may never become common.

It may become a future collectors item for EV/BMW enthusiasts but it’s never going to make one a good buy in 2020. The i8 also has much better potential on that front.
