Which CPU?

Currently have a ryzen 5 2600 and I’m planning on giving it to my son along with the motherboard. I’ve already ordered a ASUS strix b550 board but can’t decide whether to wait for the 5600x to come back in stock or get a 3600xt? I only really game so more cores isn’t really a benefit to me.

What GPU? unless you have something like a 2080TI/3070/RX6800 or above you're not going to see the difference in games if you go for a 3600 or a 5600X.

If you're not bothered about having the very latest CPU just get the 3600, its still a very capable CPU.

Try your 2600 in your b550 board if it works then you can wait for the 5600x.

Currently have a 1070 but do plan on upgrading when the prices settle down and stock levels are normal. I’m not expecting to see much difference with the 1070, but I’m giving the 2600 to my son with the b450 board I already have so will need a new cpu regardless.

Its a tricky one because 5600X vs 3600 you would see a difference in performance with a high-end GPU, i'm running a 2070 Super with a 3600 and its great, good pairing, but if i was to upgrade to a 3070 and certainly an RX 6800 or higher i would want the 5600X to get the best out of it consistently.

Another idea is if you can find a used 3600 somewhere cheap enough use that until you can find a 5600X, if you're buying the 3600 used as a temporary measure you can sell it on again once you have the 5600X, you might lose £20 or so.

Go into the AMD GPU thread and say something bad about AMD, or the Nvidia GPU thread and say something bad about them, you will get your post count up soon enough

Try your 2600 in your b550 board if it works then you can wait for the 5600x.

I think B550 boards don't officaly support Ryzen 2nd generation CPU's.

That's true but there is lots of people having unsupported cpu's working on b550 and x570 motherboards.

Worth a try.

Overclockers offers systems with B550 boards and Ryzen Zen 3 GPUs. https://www.overclockers.co.uk/ocuk-gaming-rapier-amd-ryzen-zen-3-5600x-gaming-pc-fs-122-og.html. So some of them obviously do work.

I’ve settled on a 3600xt which I got a good deal on.
