Radeon 6900 XT

The black screen is what I had during benchmarks but then resolved itself (or seemingly so) once I plugged in my second cable as I was half asleep when setting it up (card has 3 pins)

Maybe try running two separate cables instead of the splitter if that's what you're doing?

I'm using two separate cables, what PSU are you using?

I would have thought the 850w Seasonic I'm using would be plenty at stock but I notice on the LTT video they mention they had problems with a 1000w Seasonic tripping using a 6900 XT.

I had a Corsair RM750x prior to buying then realised as soon as I bought the GPU that I needed a PSU of 900w. Preferring to be on the safe side I bought the Corsair RM1000i. My issues were likely caused by me not plugging all the PCI cables into the card however. Although, I should say that the card was running with just two pci-e cables plugged in, it must have just shut down when it wasn't able to draw enough power under load.

Just two PCIe? I thought it only had two power connectors?

It leaves me in a bit of a bind though, I only bought this PSU at the start of November but that puts me outside the return window. I could return the 6900 XT but I really like the card otherwise (well ignoring the coil whine) and I don't want to be stuck waiting potentially months to get a 3080 or 6800 XT as my 1070 really runs poorly at 3840 x 1600.

He has the Red Devil, that one has 3 power connectors.

Show us some numbers, like max power, frequency, 3d mark scores.

I had a problem with sea sonic power supply with my water cooled vega 64 I think it was a multi rail version. I had to change to a single rail EVGA. Which did the trick. On the coil problem mine does when the frame rate in some games goes over 500 FPS. Try putting a frame rate limit in the AMD drivers.

I limit my frame rate to my monitor refresh rate (165) anymore seems like a waste of electricity, noise and heat...!

Really? How so?

If you pay attention to your framerate (and enable decimal places) you'll see that it can push over the frame rate cap up to 2fps over in some cases and even going 0.1fps over means it's breaking your gsync/Freesync sweet spot which introduces extra latency and sometimes even tearing. Cap framerates to 3fps under max refresh

Interesting, I will check that out thanks!

Posted in owners thread but posting here as well in case it helps anyone

3rd update on coil whine if anyone's interested. I bought cyberpunk and have been playing it without headphones and while I can notice some coil whine, it certainly isn't as bad as it is in benchmarks.

The video shows me tabbing in and out of the game to show the contrast in sound, with the first half inside the case (right next to the card) and the second half outside, with the case closed. With the case closed my phone is right next to the case for the first few seconds then it is moved away to my seating position, around 80cm away. The mic doesn't pic it up too well but it does give you an idea of how much quieter it is outside. For those with better insulated cases, it may be much quite.

With the gpu undervolted, there is a change in coil whine so this might be worth trying?

I am also pulling c275w (from radeon overlay) and running anywhere from 60-90fps on ultra (without Ray tracing as that's not supported yet)

Have you tried finding a scenario that causes the worst whine possible, then left it running that for 24 hours non stop to see if it helps reduce it?

This has tamed some squealers for me over the years and might be easier to try than an RMA given the current climate.

Worst seems to be heaven benchmark to date, with default settings/over clock.

It's improved since I plugged in 2 separate power cables, but plugging in a 3rd didn't seem to dull The noise. I might try switching out the cables with the braided cables from corsair, both for aesthetic reasons as the current cables with 3 splitters looks pretty damn ugly. The only issue is I only need 3, and they come in sets of 2 -.- if anyone is thinking of buying some of the type 4 cables let me know, maybe we could come together and sell the third! Or alternatively if they need the third cable we could split...

I've thought about running the card over 24 hours but problem is I need to be able to sleep lol. I suppose I can use it as white noise!

As I write, I'm playimg cyberpunk and the coil whine is super low..... Maybe you're onto something

Do it my man, we sleep with a fan on the highest speed every night. White noise helps mummy, daddy and baby sleep Lol. :D

I might fire up Unigine Heaven to see if i can get my card to whine. What res/settings do you use?

Why would an AMD user even try that benchmark? The cards will never go close to Nvidia cards because there was/is no reason for AMD to focus on extreme tessellation.

I’m not running it for benchmark scores couldn’t care less what it scores. Think the last time I benched it was using a 290x.

After having used the 6900 XT for a bit the coil whine has improved, it's hard to notice in normal use and if I listen close to the case it sounds about as loud as the fans on the default profile settings under load. So not great but not a complete disaster either, most people wouldn't mind I think but it would be annoying for anyone who wants silence.
