When will GPUs return to normal pricing....

I was lucky enough to get a PS5 on release day for £360, I'm pretty satisfied with it and decided to put off upgrading my 1070 for another year or 2 when stock issues are resolved. While the stock situation with consoles isn't any better, at least Sony and Microsoft keep retailers on a tight leash and don't allow them to join in the scalping fun.

People like me who use high-resoluton VR headsets on older cards definitely need to upgrade. I can't run flight and racing sims at a decent frame rate, resolution and level of detail on my Valve Index or Quest 2 using a 1080ti, even though I have a 3900x processor. Also a high framerate with no frame drops is essential for VR to feel comfortable. Choppy framerates in VR can make you feel physically sick.

I think you've missed the point. Need and want are 2 different things. You don't need a new card, you want one. You need food, shelter, warmth, company. You don't need a graphics card.

I've said it many times - I currently have a 670 in my PC and am really wanting to upgrade, so to see so many people who have perfectly capable cards from the previous generation in their system chomping at the bit to get a new card is interesting, as it is mostly psychology behind that.

This is something I've learnt about myself over the years, specifically in the years after reaching a certain financial situation where I find I can afford what I'd like (to within reason!).

Every year with graphics cards (and other products) I get slightly obsessed, read too many forums and too many news snippets and then feel I 'need' it asap. However, if I force myself to step away for a while and hold off the purchase, the need often just kinda goes away and I find that actually I was just caught up in the hype.

This year I have upgraded from my 980ti to a 3060ti, but only because I managed to get one of the cheapest Palit cards from OcUK when they went on sale least week. If I'd have missed that, then I wouldn't loose any sleep looking for one over MSRP. It made sense to grab it and sell the 980ti whilst it's still worth something.

I know that's different for people playing different stuff, using these cards for work and for people who spend more time then me gaming and in VR, but I do find that a little step back from the hype train and a little thought into real 'need' does go a long way.

Of course it's different when you can't afford what you want - then you just can't have it and continue to want it!

For the first time since the series appeared I am starting to think about just giving up for six months. I really needed a 3080, in that my current card really struggles with my monitor, but the current situation now seems likely to continue well in to Feb, perhaps even to May. It's sad but but there you go. I may well just give up until May.

I can relate to this, choosing the right hardware when you do plunge helps too tho', the 970Ti was by all accounts a great card, so much so that this forum was full of arguments about the merits of a 1070 vs 980ti. My 2600K was a perfectly decent CPU right up to the point I upgraded to a Ryzen 7 3700 (thanks to a 4.3ghz clock which was all I could squeeze out of mine on with a 212). Conceivably I would have skipped this gen of GPUs if I hadn't chosen a 1070 to drive 1440uw instead of waiting for a 1080Ti. By contrast if I had stayed TeamRed like every other card I had ever owned to that point, I certainly wouldn't still be on an RX480 of that I am certain. How long a 3070 can suppress the upgrade itch is going to depend entirely on the 8GB of RAM debate pans out I guess, my fingers are crossed for 4 years bar the odd terribly coded example.

The annoying thing for me is I normally couldn't justify the expense but an unexpected bonus has come through from work, so even though I can now afford a 3080, I can't get hold of one easily, and I'm not willing to pay much if anything over RRP.

sadly, unless Nvidia have an ace up their sleeve I can't imagine many MSRP cards, I know someone who got a Gigabyte 3080 today (this is the 3rd 3080 he has bought in the last 3 weeks) which was £900+ from a competitor.

Will be interesting to see what the new excuse for hiking prices up will be.....

With brexit deal done, pound will surely strengthen considerably over the coming months so can no longer use the crutch of "brexit no deal!!!!! think of the pound" excuse :D

I’ve been affected by Christmas manias since 1982 and what i would add to the thread is that you do tend to see a ‘boomerang’ effect happen after Christmas when people open and use their new stuff only to realise they can close the box
and sell it for a profit on the secondary market.

I fully expect this to happen with some of the more novelty items, like the Mario Kart kits and there will be more temptation to flog the PS5/Xbox X if you can get double the price paid simply because you know, based on past experience, that the U.K will be flooded with them within 12 weeks of Christmas passing.

I had a look last night and there are 11,000 listings for 3070 cards on the flea, some people want £850 for one and the vast majority will be passed on without the warranty.

At some point in February the musical chairs on this silliness will stop as nvidia and amd ship over 4 million units in 3 months because, that is their business model, shipping mass produced items on a huge scale. If they can’t do it anymore, they are out of business.

We are in multi-year structural decline of the PC market, don’t be fooled by this stock tightening or talk about twitch streamers, the pool of people buying these GPU cards to put in a PC is going down every year, not up.

You know it absolutely stuns me that people are prepared to buy at those prices given that they won't be getting a warranty. Sure, it's not very often stuff fails, but second only to motherboards is graphics cards on my list of personal fails.

Exactly.

As the market becomes more niche, prices will go up to make up for lost sales, happens with everything.

These new consoles will only accelerate it even more, absolutely crazy the price of them considering you are basically now getting locked 4k60 with high graphical settings, something which only a £1500-2000 PC can achieve now, obviously fast forward a year or 2 and PC will be back in the lead with new hardware and all, but again, will the cost of the hardware to achieve a significant lead over the consoles be worth it?

I'll be picking up a series x or ps 5 at some point next year, just holding out for a good bundle and to see if the ps 5 will be getting any more great exclusive titles.

Been reading that PC monitors are the next thing to go mad on pricing, which is funny as they are already ridiculously over priced :D

The new consoles are a rtx2080 and they are not doing 4k 60 in many games, games Ive played so far have been 1080-1600p 60fps

Graphics cards seems too much of a cartel. There’s no way part costs have risen 100% in a few years. They’re all just being clever.

I remember buying my gtx580 on release for 399.99 and thinking ‘by eck, that’s expensive’

Now you struggle to even get a midrange card for that..

The 3080 is a good card BUT IT'S NOT THAT GOOD! Any true enthusiast would realise that.

This. I ordered the following day from launch paying £719.99. That's £50 extra for the OC version which I was happy to pay knowing it would get me a card sooner and £20 extra to OCUK. I see the card is now priced at £829.99. I don't know where the cut off should be, but it's getting silly.

Which the LG CX (a TV) blows out the water for 1.4k :D
But is completely useless as a PC monitor with being far to big and suffers burn in
Plus an OLED HDR brightness is only around 700 nits which when used at full brightness would suffer from even quicker burn in of static images.
And then you got the auto dimming of the display

Completely useless as a PC monitor you say? Tell that to the hundreds of people using the 48" version as one. :p

Although for a daily all rounder one I agree that it's not ideal but for a gaming monitor it's perfect. You won't get burn-in from just gaming.

OLED blows VA/IPS out the water for picture quality and burn-in is mostly overstated by people who never owned an OLED. You'd literally have to be a fool to spend double the money on that PG32UQX though.
