Picture of it as it stands now. Once I finish the rest of the room I will do something with the hole!

Plastic skeleton, a santa costume and some wrapped presents.... Park it in there and then close the hole off, skim and decorate... A treat for someone to find in years to come when they decide to re-instate the fireplace.....
Same when doing a patio - Plastic skeleton wearing old clothes in a hessian sack... Make someone have a brief panic in the future when re-doing the patio.

Not that I have done any of these things... Nope, not me. And hiding a random assortment of sex toys and porn in the wall when putting a stud wall back in... Nope, not me. Must have been the builders...

When we moved in we had a large (LARGE!) free standing open fire, and a feature wall that was a horrible shade of purple. Not my taste at all.

The fire stuck into the room by over 1m, was enormous and took up loads of room.. Plus it was ALWAYS a cold metal box.

Ripped it out.

(For a sense of scale, thats a BKElec monolith DF sub next to it...

And now. Fire gone, but easily re-instated if we want it in the future.

I like that idea. I have already done 2 patios, so I can't do it there so looks like the fire it is!

Real presents, well wrapped to preserve them... A newspaper that is current and a brief note saying hi, who you are, the date etc and giving your name+enough details etc to help someone in the future possibly track you/your family down and share a laugh.

Yeah, I might get my daughter to help me do that. Leave something nice like a kind of time capsule that is, not bones or a severed head or anything. She will think it's exciting.

Wow that is nice. I worked on a home with a fireplace like this just empty space shotblasting. Always jealous of spaces like that!

Thank you. 500 years ago it was all an open fire when the house was a Kentish Hall house. Some of the roof timbers are scorched from those days in the attic,

Finally done, some scraps of Iroko (or maybe Teak?) from an old garden table, some walnut from a bit of old skirting board and some oak trim all mounted on some mdf (which you can't see). It's not perfect, but I'm pretty happy with it. Couldn't get hold of a basket on pine cones which is the standard fire opening filler so the flowers had to do! I'm going to put a big oak beam/shelf on the wall above it later.

There was some monstrosity of a 70's gas fire installed prior. Complete rennovation, obvs.

Another we removed another gas fire, and back boiler, exposed the arch brickwork and use as a wood store, one is a more formal affair with granite hearth, limstone surround and a burner, and 3 upstairs are restored castiron fireplaces with wooden\tiled surrounds.

Just burning some 3 year seasoned Privet saved for the Holidays.......have a large hedge encircling the house some had to remove. Burns really well!

How much heat can be felt out to the sides with this set up? I ask as I want similar but my TV is where your shelves are and screen is flush with front of chimney breast if that makes sense.

I doubt there's a lot of heat there. I'll light it up for a bit later and see.

Ran it up for 20 minutes at full tilt (5kw gas burner)

Surface temperature of the external wall of the fireplace under the shelf didn't change significantly
