Do PCs have Microsoft office installed?

I need to buy a laptop for my daughter. I went to a well known store online.
I spoke to help-desk live; they told me that the Microsoft office would not work unless I purchased the 1 year subscription. I got the impression that you can use Microsoft office for a month then have to purchase.

Funny thing is the old versions of MS Office are also better. It still functions the same as it always did and the file formats are the same, it now just runs slower because it's full of bloat and spyware.

you can get a 12 months Office 365 sub for £40 a year from a couple of places a few times a year - stackable as well. As you get 1TB onedrive and you can share it with 5 other people (each get their own 1TB of onedrive) then it's a no-brainer. I've given a licence to a few family members as £40 for 1TB onedrive on it's own is good value.

I'll happily work with any Office version up to 2003 though. 2007 or later with the ribbon interface and I'm lost as I have to google where the command placements are, even though I've had 2007/2010 on work PCs for over 10 years. With the file/edit/view/format/tools/help menu, I knew where everything was. Why change that? Microsoft at the very least should have allowed users to switch between the ribbon and the old style menu.

Just to echo the comments about the shop in question. Do not buy from them, absolute nightmare if there is a problem. I've been waiting 2 months for a refund on some faulty headphones and every time you call them you have to guess which option will put you through to a human.

Office 97 was the last proper Office IMO - been too many style over substance type changes, etc. since.

IIRC some patent issues why they don't use the old style menus any more - which are far superior IMO - unfortunately someone(s) at MS has an unhealthy attraction to the ribbon interface which largely I find hateful and has ruined many MS products since i.e. Explorer in 10 is just LOL.
