Hey guys,

I thought I had a problem with my SKY broadband, the Xbox dropping out now and again, so I reset my router, but the problem persisted..

I have the internet going from : wall >> router >> power line (living room) >> power line (man cave) >> Xbox / TV lan.

so I connected my tv and Xbox via the power line 5G band and tried downloading a game (dead space) and it wasn’t much slower than Ethernet, and had made the Xbox area much less cluttered ( wee bonus )!

I tried my iPad (which is on the wi-if of the SKY router) and was still snappy for basic use..

so to my question, am I ok running the tv / Xbox on the 5G band, for long term? Or is there any added benefit I will be missing if using via Ethernet?

oh, and too add, the signal strength is fine as the power line is literally about 15 inches from my tv and Xbox!

Cheers.

As long as the signal is good 5GHz is generally very reliable. If your power lines aren’t giving you good speeds then I see no issue with continuing to use the 5GHz WiFi.

Wait, you’re using power line to a WiFi access point and then connecting to that via WiFi? Are you able to connect to the Router via WiFi directly? Might be worth testing as it sounds like the power lines are the limiting factor here.

sorry, I haven’t been clear, I’m using the inbuilt 5G wi-fi on the powerline to hook my Xbox to, I would connect directly to the SKY router but it’s across the house and signal isn’t as strong..

Unless you play fighting games you won’t notice a difference with your setup.

No, I don’t play fighting games, so that’s fortunate :p

Well, the internet just dropped again on YouTube.

will look into the power lines and might end up phoning SKY and see what’s what :(

Hey guys,

if anyone can give me some tests to try that would be awesome, I’m beginning to get paranoid that’s it’s the Ethernet and WiFi on the Xbox? :(

Go into your routers admin setting and look at the error reporter. Also have it run a check of connection.

So you've tried it directly into the Series X and the internet still drops?

yeah, it was through the powerline though.

is it worth plugging directly into the router and running my 20m Ethernet cable?

Just phoned SKY and done a line check, no problems found. Told me to change a few WiFi settings in the router, which I have just done..?

.

Oh I meant directly router to Xbox or is that not an option? I had poor connection via my powerlines, ended up buying a 30/40m cable and running it up the stairs and under the carpets to a switch to provide my pc/ps4/series-x/tv etc. I get no drops, consistent internet and full 380/35 line now.

Yes run a 20m cable and see how it is then

running the cable just now mate. Will report back.

if it does help and turns out to be the power lines, what’s my options?

I’m in a rented property so Ethernet running is a no go

how about a good quality mesh set be??

Only option then is to either use ethernet or invest in a good mesh set.

Are you putting the powerlines into a multi-plug setup? I’ve had to do that to get my bt in other room . But as a rule they don’t like it.

the powerline had pass through, and they were passing through to a 6 Gang power strip.

looking at mesh systems now..as so far the Ethernet connected direct haven’t dropped once yet.

Yeah mine has pass through as well. But they ideally don’t like multi plugs. I’ve done it as a compromise, and get some hiccups when watching 4k footy. But I’ve got virgin as well as BT atm so I have a fallback for my other connections.

ahh right, thanks for that info, I’m limited to plugs so pass through is my only real option, think it will be mesh for me..

Just out of interest and off topic, I’ve been looking at internet packages with interest the last few months. The speeds have been lowered drastically on fibre packages. The basic fibre small and fibre large are slower than when they first came out. I’ve even checked my own package and it’s now saying my average is lower than what my contract said my max was at the time.

if you go lower down the food chain....basic broadband was a max of 24 mbs... your lucky if it’s half that these days. I think they are deliberately lowering speeds.

Recent OFCOM changes mean they now have to report an average speed across all their customers in advertising before giving you your personalised speed estimate.

Yes I realise that. But the actual speeds of max are WAY lower than when they first came out.
