Got a question about a Jumper Kit.

Hey all!

My brother got back home after a month away at work and his car was dead upon his arrival at the car park. A local driver helped him jump start it using a jumper kit, and he wants to get one himself so that he doesn't have to screw around in a downpour next time out if it goes flat again.

Only thing is he's not sure what type to get, and neither am I so I thought I'd ask for some help. It'd be jumping a Yuasa SMF 80Ah 720CCA type battery for a Lexus 220, so he'd need something that's able to output enough juice for that.

As per usual, the best combination of price and utility's what we'd be looking at as it's not something that's likely to get too much use, but would be handy to have as a backup for when needed.

Thanks in advance.

Has the OP considered one of the Sealey Electrostart capacitor packs? No need to keep them charged as they energise from the subject vehicle’s battery providing it has a few volts left in it.

I have the 1100A (which was somewhat more pricey that the OP may want) because I was working with a bunch of clowns who couldn’t remember to switch the DC/AC inverters in several large Mercedes vans off at the end of the day.

I’ve started 3 litre diesel V6 Mercs that didn’t even click when the key was turned and an ancient Renault truck with a battery so old that it could have been fitted by General de Gaulle. Regular cars and SUVs don’t even make it break into a sweat.

I got one similar to the linked one from Amazon 3 years ago for £75. Never had to use it on our cars but recently helped a neighbour with their X-Trail and after several goes of star ting (Due to other issues of the car) we got it fired up, it took a qtr of charge and I had this thing turning over and over multiple times. Very impressed with it.

You do obviously have to keep it charged. I have to check it each year.

I bought an asperx 1000a kit from Amazon, cost around 70 quid, used it twice on neighbours cars one 2.0 petrol and similar size diesel. Worked great and display still showed 94% remaining.

Appreciate the feedback, everyone! That Ring RPPL300 looks good, though my brother's unconvinced by its size. I think he was expecting something massive, as the guy had a professional kit that was pretty substantial to hear him tell it.

One quick question though, Argos has two of that model listed with one (£100) up to 3 litres and another one (the one mentioned above, £75) up to 2 litres. Worth going for the £100 model to be on the safe side, or is the smaller one going to be sufficent? https://www.argos.co.uk/search/ring...archbar:productdetails:term:ring+jump+starter

Appreciate the input, seriously. It's not exactly my area of expertise, as you can probably tell.

There is a more powerful streetwise kit on Argos for 90, maybe a better compromise on cost Vs performance.

? If you leave the charger in the car for a month, potentially winter time, will the lithium battery be fine at your time of need

I just carry jump leads, but had considered getting some with an anti surge to porevent nacking either my electrical system, or someone elses.

I’ve got a dirt cheap 20,000mAh one from Amazon and it’s had no issues starting my 3.2 V6 TT when it’s been left standing.

Sure it with “only” start it 4~ times before needing to be recharged, but if you need to jump your car 4 times in one outing then there’s likely something else wrong anyway!

Appreciate all the input! My brother decided to go for the Ring RPPL300 after it was recommended here and checking a few reviews - also, it could be picked up locally so he'll be able to get it set up before he leaves in a few days. The NOCO looks like it's awesome, but also a bit too expensive given how often he expects to be using it.

The other main concern he has is the one Jpaul raised a few posts back - since it's the middle of winter, I'm assuming the lithium battery will hold a charge over the month he's away without being sapped from the cold?

It has to be kept in the car while he's away, as the airport's miles away from his home. I'd assume it will, but I feel I should also double check just to put his mind at ease.

I get your point about the cost on the NOCO but its a bit like buying a cheap parachute. Do you want to save money on an item like this? As regards the 'how long it holds charge' query - the NOCO is guaranteed 95% after 12 months. And there are smaller/cheaper NOCOs.

I do believe in paying for quality, but the feedback and reviews I checked for the the Ring jump starter have generally been very positive overall so I doubt it'll turn out to be a lemon. At least I hope not!

I'm not the one paying for it at the end of the day though so convincing him to pay twice the price over a product people have recommended already would be a pretty tough sell. I do like the look of the NOCO though, looks very professional - but my brother'll be happy so long as the item works.

Please have a look at solar panel battery chargers. It seems that a jumper pack is just a band aid for fixing a problem that wouldn't even be there with a solar panel charger which can just sit on the dash whilst away and drive away without even having to pop the bonnet.

Jump starting modern cars is not advised as it can seriously damage the electronics, have seen it many times with people incurring very large bills for new ECU etc, but a charger.
