EV general discussion

Not just at launch. My Model 3 Performance was delivered with 7 defects in the paint, body panels and upholstery. They don't really PDI them. They hand them over and teh new owner finds the faults really. None were ever fixed. Not that I had the car that long (about 3 months) but they weren't that interested in 'minor cosmetic' issues. I did have a drive issue that they fixed very quickly.

Tesla's real party-piece is the OTA updates. When they have a software issue (and most of the car is software controlled) they just update it and it's done. It's a very refreshing experience.

Thts for correcting me ;) I didn’t want to go straight in and glad an ex owner shared his experience of it not just being launch cars.

yes SOTA is great, i got some yesterday in my dual SIM car with twin Bluetooth phone connections.

to wit - the id3 ? you need a reliable interlock on the update process so you don't brick it , as with the firmware update on a laptop.

No they don't, the are in the minority, given that most BEV's are just shoehorned ICE's with a powertrain change.

Agree, its simply the electrical architecture in the car. The new defender is quite a good example on up-datable modules benign to the driveline.

Most EV's have OTA software and system updates.

I'm not sure that's correct. I'm not talking about the ability to update maps. I'm talking about really core "BIOS" level firmware updates. Most cars can't/don't do that. They have live updates for traffic, occupied or broken chargers and that sort of thing,

Tesla - Yes
Polestar - Yes
iPace - ?
Kia - No
Hyundai - No
VW iD3 - Currently no, promised for sometime in 2021
Audi eTron - No
Vauxhall Corsa e/Vauxhall Mokka/Peugeot 2008e/Peugeot 208e - No
Citroen C4 - No
Xpeng (all models) - Yes
Mercedes EQC - ?

So on this basis (and I'm sure I've missed some models) the vast majority of cars don't do OTA updates as yet.

And If I've got something wrong - I'm sure you won't be backward in telling me.

Most EV are new platforms which helps. MY21 IPACE gets the brand new system from Defender for example (also now in pretty much every JLR car)

500 Mb was useless on the Velar and Evoque with incontrol pro as Apple CarPlay seemed to use it rather than the phones data - tried to get into habit of connecting car to my unlimited phone hotspot. Was annoying for traffic etc but I tended to use CarPlay anyway.

2021 brings in PIVI Pro which is about 20Gb from what I understand: plenty. Data so far okay and I prefer the incar Nav as it’s much better now like updates to EV chargers and the HUD has more detail now for the turn instructions.

Any performance hatches on the horizon that anyone is aware of? Circa 500bhp plus
I think an EV performance hatch is some way off, until battery tech improves at least. Current battery weight and cost mean anything with the equivalent of 400+bhp is heavy and expensive (looking at Polestar 2, Tesla Y and Mach-E). Smaller cars don't have the space for a larger battery which means range will be very limited.

One day Squidward will realise the reason he finds performance hatches boring isn't because they're too slow in a straight line.

I don’t see why a hot version of the ID3 wouldn’t be considered a hot hatch like the Seat.

The polestar and and Mache are a bit lardy but they are both cross overs with high roof lines.

The model 3 is only about 300kg more than a focus ST and is a bigger car. A model 3 drive train in a hatch body will not be that much heavier in the grand scheme of things.

The cost of making batteries for EV's is coming down. In a couple of years the cross over cost for EV's and ICE cars will be the same.

Manufacturing EV Battery cost per kWh
2010 : Nissan Leaf - $1,200 per kWh
2018 : Tesla Model 3 - $136 per kWh
2020 : Tesla Model Y - $108 kWh
2023 : Expected to be less than $100 per kWh

The electric buses in China are already below $100 at the pack level. They obviously benefit from a bigger scale in the pack itself but all signs are pointing downwards.

$100 at the pack level is apparently where we will start seeing price parity with ICE. Though I can’t see that happening on these big packs at that price, perhaps some of the smaller 50kwh packs though.

I am a Neanderthal admittedly but I just want to get a car with everything working on day 1 and have it working exactly the same way on day 1000. That's not to say the ability for the car to update itself shouldn't be utilised but it shouldn't be a crutch for unfinished development and it shouldn't distinctly change the cars UI. That needs to be right before they take a customers money IMO.

I’m with you on this. The heavy reliance that many electric cars have on software and the ability to be updated makes me wonder when electric cars will have their first Cyberpunk 2077 experience.
