Free pass on speeding fines in EU

You could generally get away with it before (dunno about in more recent years but a few years ago)... unless you revisited and they happen to spot you again for whatever reason...

Don't worry, there's a ton more cooperation agreements getting flushed which will float to the surface as and when problems of not having them arise.

1. They have your registration number.
2. They are on a trans-national database.
3. There are really only 4 sensible points of entry for cars to Europe and you won’t be allowed to proceed past the port of entry until you pay the outstanding fine.

This has been happening in Holland for quite some time. Even flying into Schiphol my boss and I were stopped at Immigration and he was pulled off to an interview room where they informed him he had an outstanding speeding fine from 3 years previous and if he didn’t pay the fine plus interest he’d be going to prison. So he paid (they take credit cards). Don’t speed.

Won’t work on the autoroutes as you’ll just have a blue light reception at the next toll plaza.

The Gendarmes will escort you to the nearest cash point if you don’t have enough on you to pay the spot fine. If you’ve been really silly, you’ll be locked up and wheeled in front of a judge in the morning.

Good to know. Been back since? Particularly to Holland?

I researched it extensively and DVLA were not giving out details due to national security. (It might have changed now and will more than likely go back to how it was now Brexit has happened) I was flashed in Poland and Lithuania. Private car of course. It is completely different if you are in a rental as they have your details. That's how your boss was caught more than likely.

Times after 2016 I have been more careful. As you do the journey more and more you get used to it. I was in a bit of a rush the first time as I had to cancel my ferry and go tunnel so wanted to get as much done in daylight as driving with wrong headlights isn't nice.

Yep they wont give out the driver details which is why you get away with it in a private car. Just make sure you change your reg before you go back :D

It will work on the autoroutes against the fixed cameras and unmarked camera cars which are the main issues really. I lived in France for a while and drove for a living, I set off countless hidden cameras and camera cars, but only got stopped by the gendarmes once, which was my own fault for not paying attention.

Isn’t it always your fault because 1. You’re driving and 2. You shouldn’t be going so fast you can’t see speed cameras and police cars?

Yes, of course. I just mean that there was less excuse for not seeing the police car as it wasn't particularly hidden, unlike some of the cameras and camera cars. I'm not someone who whines about getting caught, or indeed cares even slightly what others think of my driving.

Does anyone know what would happen is *someone* also had a non-EU driver's license and used that when stopped in Europe?

Is it a valid UK driver's licence or a 1926, 1949 or 1968 International Driver's permit or was it a US one issued from somewhere like Little Rock DMV?
