Watching this video, it seems the 10400f is as fast as the 10900k at 4k resolution.


Why do people buy 10700k as the main choice for gaming? Surely 4k is pretty standard for gamers now, especially those that would spend £400 on a cpu.. like I did with the 9700k. Is it just completely unnecessary to buy a expensive processor for 4k gaming alone?

10400f can be picked up for £128.99 at OCUK. Be sure to grab a z490 to fully utilise 3200mhz ram speed though.

I done this as well.

I was looking a few months ago at benchmarks for my son building his first pc and even though he had a bigger budget it seemed pointless spending any more.

The 10400f was as fast as my 9700k but much cheaper.

He just got cheapest z490 and 16gb c14 3200 and 10400f only came to like £300.

It's quite remarkable how there're still any gamers out there who aren't aware that games are totally GPU limited at 4k. You simply don't need a very power CPU to push pixels, that's the GPU's job.

Nice, I'm thinking of selling my 9700k and z390 and doing the same, will have change and 3 years more warranty. Should tide me over until ddr5 is mainstream.

Even at 1440p the gap is massively reduced in many real world gaming scenarios.

The only 2 games that I had cpu problems at 4k were flight sym and watchdogs with raytracing, I tried them both on release might be better now.

You need an even less powerful CPU for 1080p.

4k at 144Hz needs a faster CPU than 1080p 144Hz.

It's just because today's GPUs struggle at 4k so a CPU is held back and is under utilised.
 
I got a Z490 board unexpectedly recently, so decided to upgrade my 9900K. Thought I'd wait for the 11th gen but wanted to verify the motherboard was OK, so paid £76 (delivered) for a 10300F, not thinking it would be that good but enough to verify the board is OK. Whilst I will actually get an 11th gen to utilise PCIE4.0, the 10300F has really pleasantly surprised me, it's essentially nigh on identical to my old 7700K for £75. 4 cores, 8 threads, HT enabled. It's shockingly good value.

"On par with the 3600" which is great and its currently cheaper than the 3600, its a win for the 10400F and you should buy it over the 3600, but lets not kid ourselves here the 10900K is still the better gaming CPU and that's to say nothing about the Ryzen 5800X or even 5600X.

Also, if you're gaming at 4K you're not buying a 10400F.

Look at the benchmarks? For 20 games, 10400f is about 1 FPS different or the same as the 10900k at 4k.

I think you've just made my point.. those who game at 4k think they need a 10900k.. you clearly don't.
 
For most gaming at 4K/60 even a 10400f is overkill and you can get away with a weaker cpu, a first gen Ryzen will also be overkill.

That said some games are cpu heavy such as MSFS 2020 but this is poorly optimised using 1-2 cores heavily. There is something to be said too for running a faster cpu at 25% rather than a weaker one at 100%, enables you to do other things at the same time.

I doubt very many people are combining a weak cpu with an RTX 3085 though as it’s often better to balance a system for other uses too.

This is what i'm talking about, at 4K you can run a potato and get the same Frame Rates as high end CPU's, i'm not missing the point at all, its a good budget CPU, i made that point very clear, but you're not buying it to run on a 6800XT or a 3080, its more relevant for people who buy 1080P cards, which aren't as powerful as those high end GPU's for pushing high Frame Rates at 1080P in which case you don't need a high performance CPU anyway. If we are only gaming at 1080P with a 2060 or 4K with a 3080 we only need a 10400F, or a Ryzen 2600, i don't need a 5800X, a 10400F paired with my 2070 Super will do the same job at my 1440P native resolution, the 3600 did, i still bought a £440 CPU.

About as surely as 600BHP is standard for anyone that actually drives a car on the road these days...

Thing is, once you get past the 4K UHD ultra super sampled Ray-Traced prettiness of the game, it all fades into the background and you just end up focussing on the gameplay. It was the same with VR - Half an hour and you no longer notice how good something looks... You're purely focussed on the crosshairs, shield counters and ammo levels.

As for why people actually choose a 10900 over a 4, 6 or 700 - Presumably they do things other than game with their PC?

It depends on how well the game is coded and the power of your graphics card. If your graphics card is as fast as the likes of Radeon RX 6900 XT, and the game is coded to scale well with more CPU cores, sooner or later you will have problems with only 6 cores of that Core i5-10400F.
Poor coding for now keeps it relatively not bottlenecking but expect it to become obvious by the next days.

Buying a10700k or a 10900k over 10400 is not just about 4k but a few older games which only use 1 or 2 cores love the extra mhz that those cpu`s can hit also that 10400 will age a lot quicker.

yeah a faster cpu will keep up with cards for many years
