Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Surely - as per the announcement - it's only people who aren't on the recent bundles that are affected, I took out a new contract only 2? months ago and haven't been affected, the mailing data may well have been pulled prior to your change from old contract/bundle.

You you can book a disconnection now for the end of February, offers won't change much month on month, if anything staff are more likely to try and keep up save rate at the end of the month as it's what dictates bonus.
as I said only got the letter on Saturday so there is time for you yet :D

All going well, we should be moving in the next month or so. Fortunately, the new place already has Virgin Media hooked up so I'm hoping for a self install move and just take my hub with me. I suspect that may depend on the seller moving or cancelling their connection in good time though?

As some of you know, I've been waiting since 19th November 2020 which was my initial install date, but due to cable blockage etc they said will take up to eight weeks (after they failed to contact me and waste my time waiting on the install date or even let me know as a new customer what was going on via text, email or phone), I did put a nice new customer complaint in however.

Hello,

We’re really sorry, but it looks like there’s been a delay with your installation. Our team’s working hard to get you up and running as soon as possible.

For some installations we’ll need to check we have all the permissions or permits needed to complete our work.

If we need to reschedule your appointment, we’ll send the details of your new slot through separately. Remember, someone over 18 will need to be home for us to install your services.

Once the installation’s complete, you may be eligible for a bill credit as part of Virgin Media's automatic compensation scheme. We’ll update you on this after the installation is sorted.

If you’d like to know more about this scheme and whether you’re eligible, check out our handy page at virginmedia.com/Ofcom

Kind regards,

The Virgin Media team

Anyway received my new install date for BB and phone yesterday, now 28th Jan, so next week on Thursday, to be honest I don't have my hopes up, been so long waiting, it feels a let down and disappointed with their customer service so far, I also must make sure I get compensation for the delay between 19th November and Jan 28th which they stated in the above statement.

It's a shame no BT or Plusnet Fibre in my area (SE London) so only option is cable with Virgin or low speed ADSL on my street.

I'll let you know how it goes :) .

Been having disconnections all morning and a unstable connection with bad latency for months.

Turns out there has been a red flag in my area since the summer.

They didn't notify me despite submitting a lot of connection issues over the months. So I've request termination of my contract.

Annoyingly it seems like other ISP routers don't do modem only modes and I'd rather not buy a modem as I should hopefully have fttp on my street this year.

Have you thought about using 4G, if you have a good signal? I've asked to leave because of high prices and internet problems, so to test the waters I got myself a 4G router and have got a fairly stable connection that I can play BFV on which is a lot slower than the VM one.

OR ECI/HG612’s change hands for circa £10-15, you’ll be able to sell it for a similar amount, surely that’s not a massive issue?

Didnt you spend over £220 on a router plus sim costs and get a connection that dropped from 75Mbit when you first tested to 6.5mbit later on and still had the same latency/packet loss issues when gaming? Just that’s what you said in previous posts which kind of sounded like not a great result. I was kind of hoping you’d do better as a friend has poor ADSL but LoS to the local mast.

Your correct Avalon, with an Ee sim I am getting 35-50Mbps with 3 bars (not quite LoS as I live in a dip. On the 3 sim it's 10-35Mbps with 2 bars and only fair to good signal as supposedly just outside of the better signal area. Even on this connection I have managed to play better than on the VM connection (packet loss and latency symbols have been on both connections so may be the server, I don't know) and also have been able to stream tv programs over the wifi with no trouble. With the cost of the router and a sim deal I am going to be paying less than the VM deal at the moment and be able to actually use the internet. Also if EE goes down I can swap to 3 or another provider so shouldn't be without a connection for long.
The lowest deal that they offered was £24 for 50Mb connection, so getting a sim with at least 30Gb+ for £20(only me and the wife at home), no WFH so really shouldn't need more which means I would pay out less a month. Just going to use the sim for this month to get a better idea

Well I've opted to go with the Huawei 4G Router - B818-263, it was close call between that and the MicroTik, but the Cat 19 specification and the much superior internal antenna array on the Huawei tipped it, and it ended up costing less which was a bonus! I'll probably end up using the external antenna connectors however, as I reckon I'll get a significant speed boost given how good of a line of sight I have to the local masts.

Will update once I have it here and installed, I know it isn't going to be as good as the VM 350/35 service speed, but until they sort out their ridiculous retention dance they can stick it, and by the time I can get a new customer bonus again I'll have FTTP (I hope) which means 900Mbps for ~£40.

VM must have been really bad for you, I can't see many people choosing to spend £222 to save £4/month if they weren't, let alone with 30GB, especially if with the variability and still having gaming issues. Even downloading BFV is 44GB on PC, it's going to be a problem when updates hit or you buy/reinstall a game surely?

As I said previously, that I have had a better gaming experience on the 4G than on VM. I have checked 4 of the speed tests and they all report different speeds when done one after another, so not really sure of the actual speed. As I have only had it since Friday not had a lot of time to actually test it. To be honest the slow speed of 4G has been better than the supposed fast fibre. I have been looking at the EE packages but they are dearer than 3 which do an unlimited sim for £10 for 6 months then goes up to £20. So the dilemma would be cheaper unlimited but slower speed(at the minute) or faster speed but more expense. To get faster speeds I may have to look at connecting to an outside aerial but that will be in the future.

Do i start the leaving process now and find a better deal or just hope they can give me a better deal at the start of Feb?

Just give them another call. I range 4-5 times in the space of a couple of days and got wildly different deals.. The last lady I spoke to explained that they were all given a set amount of credits they could apply to customers calling, and some had used theirs, others hadnt.. (and I suspect some might not want to use theirs on you).. Just be polite and friendly and see what happens.. You can always call again and get somebody else on the line. :)

Just had a go on BFV over 4G using a 3 sim (not great coverage) latency around 85, according to 4 speed tests I was between 2.9Mbps to 20.23Mbps. This game was played over 5Ghz wifi yet it still played well unlike my VM connection. So if this is the case why have I been paying over the odds for VM? (media hype I suppose)

Unfortunately not. Mobile signal in my house is fairly bad and I use wi-fi calling.

Interesting. Didn't realise this was an option.

Just rang virgin and tried to get a better deal for the M200 broadband only package

Have you had any luck since in trying to get a better deal?
I had a letter today saying my M200 is going from £45 to £49 so tried the Live chat. Best deal I was offered was the M500 for £46.

Not yet mate, was gonna give them a call tomorrow and see what they say. Seem to be worse and worse everytime i call them.
Tempted to just take them up on the £41 offer for the 350mb package.

That's the problem with 4G in my area, especially my house I've black spots where 4G has no signal, it's hit or miss, I live in London as well, so my only real options are stay with Plusnet on slow speed ADSL or jump to Virgin cable, anyway I find out next week if I made the right decision or not, there is no BT/Plusnet Fibre on my street so my options are very limited.

I do know there are laying new cable to my house etc (from the network box down the road that they use) and the Virgin hub with be near the front door so hoping I get good connection/latency if not oversubscribed.

I did look at 4G mobile broadband, however the 4G black spot issue and needing a dedicated phone landline (due to my dad having alzheimer's) ruled that out.
Btw there is no 5G in my area.

My Plusnet slow ADSL was good but had a few days recently where it kept losing connection, had to call them up (tried different modem/routers as well with no change), probably due to too many people on the net lol.

Seems stable today. Downloading games or patches on 10Mbps is a real pain, another reason I need faster speed.

Well this landed today.

Well happy with the service from the place I bought it, took less time to get from HK than most places in the UK can get something here.

Lots of testing ahead, but initial tests suggest that Three (3) is gong to be my obvious choice, you can currently get a 12 month SIM only plan with Unlimited Data (5G included if I change the router again) for £10 per month after cashback (via redemption) still only £18pm without the cashback, then there is also Quidco on top of that which brings it down to £8.odd per month. If VM pester me with an offer that is <£27 for 350Mbps I might take it, as I doubt the speed vs. price. vs. service quality will change that much in 18 months. Or as I said earlier stick it out until FTTP and get a 500Mbps+ service for £30-40, I've got a funny feeling I'll switch to the 5G version of this if my experiment is successful, as the coverage in my area is good so far and improving weekly by the look of the maps.

I doubt you would be able to get 350Mb for that price unless you were very lucky, I went through retention and all they offered me was 50Mb for £24.

Someone else in this thread has already had it for £24, and my neighbour just renegotiated due to the £3.50 increase, they were on 200Mbps for £28, now they are on 350Mbps for £28 and a £50 bill credit, so £25.22 per month effective, they also get the phone line as well.

I wasn't that lucky, got fed up with VM so trying out 4G router which is working out quite well. Although not getting nowhere near the same speeds I can use it to play BFV better than when using VM. Still got about another 20 days before disconnection so maybe they may contact me before then.
