EV general discussion

The number one barrier to the adoption of electric vehicles is no longer cost, it is range anxiety

I wonder how much StoreDot's exciting new battery will cost, whether it could be retro-fitted to an existing car and how soon it will be available - hopefully we will not have to wait another five years?[/QUOTE]

Here's a question....

I currently have a 7kw home charger at the side of my house. We've just ordered a second EV, and want to park it right at the end of our driveway. Can the cable feeding the home charger be split into two in order to power a second charger?

Reading on the SpeakEV forums, because I've ordered another EV I can claim a second discount for another charger? If true, would be great.

6mm^2 cable will do 32A so twin chargers can only pull 16A each else the RCD will trip.

I'm happy with only charging cars one at a time. Wondering if I can somehow add a switch after the charging point, although mine is tethered but can be adapted. The idea above is quite a good one.

I've emailed an electrician to actually do the work lol

Like this after the charging point and run two heads from it

TheOracle, how much longer would the cable need to be use the existing charger?

quite long due to the stupid layout of my house. I meaured the route it would take and ended up at around 27.5m.

just depends on how I route it though. The neatest way would be along the side of my house, into my garden, under the borders all the way to the bottom, under the fence, around my parking space and into the garage. The other way would be from the charger, along the bottom of the fence into my garage. Not meaured that way yet.

Wow! Sounds like you need a proper survey by an electrician. :)

My excellent paint skills

and yes, I REALLY want to move house

That isn’t going to be a cheap install at all.

I’d budget for at least double of what they say online and that would involve you digging your own trench.

The prices they quote online are for the most basic of install with no significant barriers. As soon as you mention detached garage it’s WAY more.

Just looking at your route, does it comply with the regs to clip it to a fence?

God knows, this house is a nightmare. The biggest issue is it's a shared driveway. There is another house and garage opposite mine. It's this reason I can't swap the cars around at charging time, as car 1 is an etron. It won't fit in that parking space due to the turning circle.

That sounds quite tight, the etron is big but not that big.

I guess no cyber truck for you then :D

So many new builds are a nightmare for EVs because of things like shared parking areas etc that cross pavements, gardens and all sorts.

Just as an FYI you might also need to look at your main fuse as you could have say an 80A fuse which depending on your house load could tip you over. Can be upgraded to a 100A though

Indeed, mine had a sticker 60A/80A so was relived already 80A in there when the installer checked. Tail ends were also okay to upgrade to 100A if ever i felt the need. 60A and its time to hassle the DNO.

Sod that. Takes too long cut the seal and eBay for some tags. "Wasn't me mate".

I cant believe that you all have (intact) sealed fuses anyway, do you all have a master switch before your CU? I certainly don't but then my house is quite old.

Mines only 15 years old, but yep sealed and not fiddled with. I don’t think they are technically supposed to put kit in the meter box but seems daft to drill the wall to the consumer unit.

Ohme installed this morning and now just getting to grips with the app.

Initially it didn't work since it didn't list hyundai as an option. I tried the app on my phone and my gf' but still no joy, which was disappointing. One phone call to Ohme, and I was straight through to a CS rep. She told me their techs will look into it today and connected to my unit to see if they could identify the issue. Come mid afternoon I receive an email from Ohme advising me to update the app through playstore as they'd identified the source of the issue and rectified. Sure enough, the app update was there and once completed, my vehicle was there to select in the setup.

You can't fault customer service like that. I'd better pay my invoice now though :( :p

***has anyone found a better type2 mount that angles the handle down rather than straight out at 90deg like the one supplied? I was sure someone here said they had?***

That’s neat enough although that slight curve in feed cable is drawing my eye. :p

There’s a few on Amazon which seem to be the sister part to the one Ohme use, cranks it down and the lever release easier to get to. £25 ish.

Was tempted to get the ones more like a Tesla but prob won’t bother now, maybe just a coat of black paint in summer and maybe a hook below to wrap it in a more vertical loop.

Hey, they all like one with a kink in it, so I'm told.

Any chance of a couple of links? I'm too lazy :D
