TV Licence Super Thread

I believe you missed the point, this wasn't a consultation on whether the BBC is good value or not. It is about criminal enforcement vs civil enforcement. Evaders should be pursued by debt collectors, not sent to prison.
As a matter of interest, have many Licence fee dodgers (as a percentage) been sent to prison?

I suspect that the pursuit for payment is carried out by some private sector debt collectors - probably friends or relatives of some Government Minister ;)

We put ours off for a year as we were doing the new house up, got a reminder in the post 1 year later and told our lass to ignore it, she didn't and we are now happy clappers, joys.
Apparently she witnessed loads of TV and police enforcement in the halls of residence in Sheffield.

So anoyed, wanted to drag it out with them.

I was once working on an army base when they turned up to "inspect" all the housing and accommodation blocks. The guards made them wait at the gate for ages, while they went around the whole site with a megaphone telling everyone to hide their TVs, then gave them time to do it. It was hillarious :D

I imagine that they had practiced this in the past warning people to hide their drugs and looted goods - as you say, hilarious

Tv licence's are great. They allow me to watch advert free tv for no cost and I get some comical letters in the post for extra entertainment. Long may it last.

A lot of people pay for it who don't actually need it for reasons like this, unclear legislation and fear tactics.

It's a massive waste of court and police time, all the while 'some people' not only support an aggressively abusive and unclear system but accuse those against it of being selfish for not wanting to spend money on something they neither want or need.

This is the point really, isn't it.

There are a few angry people who have a problem with inclusiveness and have no sense of humour and as a result resent paying peanuts for a universal, unbiased, impartial service from which they claim to derive no benefit.
What is that about unbiased, impartial, some sort of joke? Perhaps 10 or 20 years ago but the BBC of today is outdated, old fashioned and a long way from unbiased or impartial. They aim to be but by there own admission they are not.

You say claim like it’s not true. For many the BBC is obsolete and useless with no benefit. Its not a claim without substance. What I find is selfish penny-pinching people seem to want to try to force the BBC onto people who don't use it for there own benefit.

I imagine that there are also selfish individuals who object to paying for the NHS, for Education, for the Fire Brigade, for the Police, for Unemployment benefit, etc. if they happen personally not to need it at some given point in time - it isn't a Smorgasbord you know?

LOL, oh yea the BBC put out hilarious content.... Also, did you just compare the BBC to the NHS and Emergency services?

Haha brilliant.

Ahh yes I remember, and when lots of people complained they just fobbed them off. Imagine if it was the other way round. The bbc has become quite the shambles of an organisation.

If it wasn't for the fact that I have sky tv, as my significant other enjoys watching it, I'd have cancelled it.

I'm assuming there's no way of getting out of the TV licence if you have sky TV?

Unfortunately not, at least not from a legal standpoint.

You're essentially watching live TV.

Last time I looked TV license prosecutions account for one tenth of all court cases in a typical year. Which is a massive amount. Do you really think that is suitable use of the courts time?

I doubt it, since they would get kicked out immediately when caught (and they do suprise drug tests).

But the TV man is a powerless jobsworth so who give a ****. They did it right in earshot of them.

They're not handled on an individual basis though, so they don't take up as much time or resource as that proportion might suggest.

Vast majority are vulnerable old people and single women. Mainly in poorer areas. People who are easy to bully.

When they try it in a wealthy or middle class area they get chased of the property and told to bugger off. So they rarely bother visiting them.

Being the progressive you are Stockhausen, why are you supporting the abuse of women?

https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/1365775/bbc-news-tv-licence-fee-latest-female-convictions-decriminalise-ministry-justice#:~:text=Women accounted for almost three, men's convictions, the MoJ found.

Women accounted for almost three quarters (74 percent) of the 114,000 convictions for TV licence fee evasion in 2019, up three percent since 2015.

Does it make you happy when aggressive sociopaths threaten people on behalf of the BBC? Is it alright in your mind for vulnerable people to be threatened and harassed?

Probably not, even if true.

The obvious alternative would be to fund the British Broadcasting Corporation out of general taxation. Sadly, this would mean that they would simply end up being the mouthpiece of the Government of the day - a bit like Trump's Fox News.
