EV general discussion

So after what seems like a million different decision changes we settled on a VW ID3 Life.

Decided to keep the costs as low as possible so stayed with the standard Moonstone Grey which in videos look great. We didn't like the steel wheels so went with the 18" Derry Alloys again after viewing various YouTube videos we couldn't really tell the difference between them and the 19", it was only when you changed to the 20" could you tell but at an almost £2k option it wasn't worth it on the lease.

Just waiting for the relevant authorisations to go through and hopefully get a delivery date in the next week or so. Unsure on the delivery times at the minute?

What a world we live in just ordering cars without ever seeing one in the flesh and after a few clicks of a button its ordered just like you would order something from Amazon!

Great choice :)
I did the same when I ordered my Polestar 2. I saw the car previewed on a website, searched Youtube & watched the Carwow and Carfection video reviews of it, then ordered it :)

What would we do without YouTube?!

I was put off by the colour on the configurator but when you watch vids it's a lovely flat lighter grey.

If it was completely down to me rather than the wife I would have stuck the 20's on! I then wanted the 19's but when we watched some walk around videos I couldnt tell the difference between the 2 so decided we may as well save some money and go the 18's which are still much better than the standard wheels.

This will take over as main vehicle with the Superb used as my commute car and caravan pulling duties with the Aygo going up for sale when everything goes through.

Did you consider the Porsche Taycan?

Not really. I prefer the look of the Porsche Taycan more than the Model 3/S on the outside. But the charging network primarily and the FSD/Autopilot difference made it a no go for me really.

The Model S is also just a bigger car, more practical with the hatchback and faster again now :D

Nice. One thing that is often overlooked with wheels is that the bigger they are, the less efficient the car is and generally speaking they have a worse ride for general driving. If you can’t tell the different between the two going for the smaller ones is a good choice. In theory you have chosen more range and a better ride for less money.

Didn't really think about that to be honest but happy with the choice. I know when it comes to the design they do need to think about the efficiency and effect on range but between the 2 there was very little difference in my opinion.

Here is the 2 different alloys. Top is what we went for, the bottom is the 19" and also shows the Moonstone grey.

yes top's much nicer

presumably the Derry Alloys are much less than £2K,
has there beee been updates on standard kit like heat-pumps or infotainment speaker system.

FWIW, I totally agree with your spec issues. I'm not in the UK, but every i3 here is poverty spec; very few have Pro Nav, let alone ACC or sunroofs. I just got lucky I guess; original owner forked out over €50k

_Finally_ found a good one, an early 17 which means free tax which is the exact age which i want (the March17 onward ones carry the stupid £300+ yearly loading until they are 5 years old, pointless);

Model I3 94 Rex
Color Mineral gray metallic / accented Bmw I - C2V
Upholstery Natural leather Stellaric / dalbergia brown - NLFT

4EA Fine-wood Trim Dark Oak Matt Fine wood finish Dark oak matt

5AK Led light elements Led light elements
5AR Traffic-queue assistant Traffic jam assistant
5AT Driving Assistant Plus Driving Assistant Plus
5DU Park Assistance Package Parking assistance package

Might go for silly money due to the spec, but i hope not as most people barely notice it, and i had to VIN decode that one after spotting the ACC buttons on the wheel. We'll see tomorrow when it sells.

£600 I think, the Andoya alloys were £1280 I believe with the 20" being around £1800.

Software is meant to have been improved but uncertain of that. I think the heat pump is still an extra option however for us the approx 200 mile range is more than enough, the wife's daily commute is 42 miles so no range anxieties for us!

That's for the range extender ? ... how useful should that be in your intended use ? Nissan are now going down that route too, so, poses same dilema
(are i3s with the new traction control many more $$)

Yes its a range extender model, i wouldn't even consider one without this as the battery is only good for ~120 miles. While this is great for probably 95% of my usage, i am a consultant based from home but usually attending client sites. I often need to drive to places on a whim, i need unlimited range for that other 5% which is totally unpredictable.

The REX is a good option for some with the unlimited range ability. One local to me just sold. It was a June 17 car, I didn't know about the extra tax on cars after March. It was poverty spec as most are, and black which I wasn't keen on. I've contacted dealer about another but a 120Ah non-rex. Seem to have a few coming into stock so will be interesting to see what can be done on pricing. Not too bothered by spec if a decent price. Quite fancy trying one now but will have an ICE available too in case of long trips.

Will have to charge via an open window initially so if can find one hopefully doesn't take too long to get a wallbox installed

Once the charging infrastructure has caught up it'll be less stupid.

Not really. The headline number that pops up on google if you search for "How many people run out of fuel in the UK" is 800,000 per year or 2200 per day. And yet there are petrol stations EVERYWHERE. Do you think any of those people who still run out will be any better when they're trying to get home to charge up on the cheap? I doubt it. What will make sense is when they get the Electric powered vans to tow capacitor discharge chargers to rapid charge cars to 10% in less than 5 minutes and we'll have one less issue to meme about.

18's are better for comfort, cheaper tyres and make the car more efficient. And it's not even as if they drop the suspension on the bigger ones to close the arch gap. I agree, the 18's are the better choice.

The post march 17 cars carry the loading for being >£40k new, i cant remember the figure, its not a massive deal but you may as well avoid it is my view. This wont apply to the non REX cars obviously. With the REX you either know that you 100% would never consider one without, or not, personally there is no way i could consider the non REX. It would make the car near unusable for me, i couldnt risk it even for a "local" client, 120 miles range really isnt very far at all if you jump through a couple of destinations in a day.

Most of them have a low spec unfortunately, but the odd high spec car does appear, look for cars with the "suite" interior which at least sorts that out, you then just need to look for the larger navigation screen. The other stuff such as the adaptive cruise etc is just a bonus.
