EV general discussion

Oh awesome. I’ll have to do some digging on that. I’m ordering via Leaseplan (through work) so will talk to them.
They won't know anything bud.

When did you order? The order confirmation from Polestar? If the e-mail of order acknowledgment from P* came in 2020, you'll get it.

Then I'm not sure you'll get either, the narrative around it was for people patience whilst they ironed out the issues we all experienced.
Fair enough. I’m not too fussed, the BP subscription seems pretty reasonable given there’s a couple of chargers 5mins from my house.

Here's me new runabout. It'll probably going to be doing some longer trips too so will be a bit of an adventure and no doubt with some anxiety :). Only 1500 miles on it. Wasn't intending to spend quite as much(up to £15k initially) but should last me a good while now.

Nice! What sort of spec is on the inside?
I couldn’t do those wheels though because they’re reversed on the other side. What has been seen cannot be unseen....

_Finally_ found a good one, an early 17 which means free tax which is the exact age which i want (the March17 onward ones carry the stupid £300+ yearly loading until they are 5 years old, pointless);

Might go for silly money due to the spec, but i hope not as most people barely notice it, and i had to VIN decode that one after spotting the ACC buttons on the wheel. We'll see tomorrow when it sells.
How much did it go for in the end? You didn’t buy it did you?

I was under the impression that the subscription gave you discounted (not free) charging in most places, then for a few places it was free. That’s how the website makes it sound. I think the sub is only like £8 a month.
That’s correct - BP Pulse sub is £8 a month for cheaper charging. As Hyburnate mention - early owners got £450 credit too.

I’ve just been trying out some of the different chargers so I know what I’m doing when I actually (might) need them later in the year.

BP pulse subscriptiondrops the rate from 30p to 15p kWh on the rapid chargers (23p on the 150kW) but gives free access to the 7kW chargers, for example my local ASDA has £1.20 connection fee then free charging for 2 hours. BP pulse subscript means no connection fee.

I did give it a good go and went over the amount that I expected to go to, but it ended up far too popular (they are not usually). It only had 13k miles, was a grade 1, it ended up over book at about £16k which is too much for a ‘66, most of these don’t make anything like that. It just wasn’t good value even with the high spec. There are loads around, unfortunately the base spec on these is so low that you need a very high spec car just to bring it into line with other cars :( Doesn’t matter though, I’ll compromise and get a better value one with spec omissions in the next few weeks, there are a few ok ones coming up.

Jez, step away from the small hatchback. There is still time not to make this mistake.
Wicksta convinced me that they are good  I want to play with an EV and I won’t buy a non German car so these seem cheap and semi acceptable...:(

(Not replacing our other cars, actually getting another big German 4x4 so I’ve not totally lost my marbles!)

Wicksta has been so badly affected by the purchase of his he's gone out and bought a C63 AMG.
Haha, if that is the end result then it sounds like we should all have a spell with an i3!

This is clearly the future, have a rubbish EV for a station car and then go nuts on the proper one?

Hopefully the Germans will catch up with rest of the world before long, for standard cars not high end marques. At least the ID.3 exists for now, even with all the software woes at least they are slowly being ironed out. The i3 for all purposes is nearly 7 years old yet BMW still haven't bested it, says a lot really about how stuck they are and the iX3 is an ICE car with the BEV kit shoved in it, not ideal.

The Germans can do it, but it’s a real shame that BMW and Mercedes don’t seem to be on the bandwagon. The Taycan for example is a beautiful car as you’d expect from Porsche - the perfect EV if you can go the price of one.

The i3 (as long as it is a high spec model to make it feel at least slightly like a real BMW) seems like a fun cheap way to have an EV from a respectable brand to me, and the REX means that it’s genuinely a usable thing (I’d never charge away from home, I never stop at services etc, no interest in public charging at all).

There are some other cheap EVs around, I noticed for example that the Ioniq 88kw models are cheaper than a reasonable i3 at 11-12k for a 2017 example - good proposition if you are not insistent on German/higher end cars....probably make the i3 look a bit rubbish on paper.

It's perfect for what it is. I don't think I could find a better car for my 25-mile return commute on a mixture of city driving and dual carriageway. Instant power delivery makes it faster than most things away from the lights and the fact it's a BEV means I can nail it straight out of the garage.
However, as @Jez says, you need to find a high-spec otherwise it'll be a miserable experience with no ACC, sun roof or pro nav, etc.

Also it'll charge overnight for peanuts on the night tariff with a granny charger.

I didn't give that a thought about the wheels tbh. Will give each side of the car a different look :). I like them, nicer looking than the base wheels without jumping to 20's which I didn't want.
Spec wise it's just wheels, sun protective glass and the parking pack (front and rear sensors, rear camera, and parking assist) I think, all options I wanted. I'm rubbish at parallel parking, just lack of practice really so tend to avoid it, so that may come in handy! Also has the darker cloth seats, I'm not overly keen on the light creamy/beige fabric seats, it' more the the pattern I don't like. Think it'd be £41k at current new prices.

I wouldn't have minded the leather and the heat pump too, the latter being very difficult to find especially and, maybe one of the wood upper dash options.

Kind of feel more excited than when buying a new 30th Anniversary MX-5 in 2019, probably as it's just a completely different type of car, so something entirely new.

I bet it's nicer in an S Class ;)
Well if money was no object, I'd buy an S600 Maybach, but unfortunately tax & insurance are a little pricey.
BMW i3 running costs:
Fuel: €0
Servicing: Brake fluid every 24 months
Registration tax: €0
Annual road tax: €0

For just under €20,000 (equivalent cost), I can get a 2008 S500L.
Registration tax: €2,373.26
Annual road tax: €3,879.58

Damn, really should've gone with that S500 right?
