Was only looking at S500s, but yeah pretty much.Twenty thousand euro for a 2008 S-Class?! I know European cars are more expensive but...woah
Well if money was no object, I'd buy an S600 Maybach, but unfortunately tax & insurance are a little pricey.
BMW i3 running costs:
Fuel: €0
Servicing: Brake fluid every 24 months
Registration tax: €0
Annual road tax: €0
For just under €20,000 (equivalent cost), I can get a 2008 S500L.
Registration tax: €2,373.26
Annual road tax: €3,879.58
Damn, really should've gone with that S500 right?
The perfect EV? Not if you're actually after an EV. It's pretty much the antithesis of what an EV should beThe Germans can do it, but it’s a real shame that BMW and Mercedes don’t seem to be on the bandwagon. The Taycan for example is a beautiful car as you’d expect from Porsche - the perfect EV if you can go the price of one.
The i3 (as long as it is a high spec model to make it feel at least slightly like a real BMW) seems like a fun cheap way to have an EV from a respectable brand to me, and the REX means that it’s genuinely a usable thing (I’d never charge away from home, I never stop at services etc, no interest in public charging at all).
There are some other cheap EVs around, I noticed for example that the Ioniq 88kw models are cheaper than a reasonable i3 at 11-12k for a 2017 example - good proposition if you are not insistent on German/higher end cars....probably make the i3 look a bit rubbish on paper.
Yes, catching up, that's interesting

An S350d would use a considerable amount of fuel in stop-start town traffic from cold and you know it. Also a good commuting tool should be good VFM and cheap to run.So we're back to what we already know - it isn't the i3 itself that's so good for commuting, it's the exceptionally favourable tax treatment they get. Because if it wasn't for that tax situation you wouldn't bother would you?
Here in the UK (this is ocuk after all), an S350d would cost under £200 a year to tax, there is no registration tax and it would use fairly low amounts of fuel. I'm not seriously suggesting an S Class as an alternative, merely illustrating how there are many many better cars to commute in than an i3 and that it's the tax situation that makes the disadvantages worth it.
Can you blame him? Japanese interiors are shocking, and you get 00's Merc switchgear in a £100k Tesla. Or a Knight Rider steering wheel..The perfect EV? Not if you're actually after an EV. It's pretty much the antithesis of what an EV should be
If you can get over the (irrelevant) need for a German brand, there's many better options than your i3.

The company car tax advantages are for pure EVs
I’ve actually notHas jez driven one yet ?
Jez is making a private purchase. The tax benefits mjt speaks of are for Belgians. I don't see how the fact it costs an absolute fortune to have anything half decent in Belgium is particularly relevant.
I just ordered without seeing it in the end. Spending my Saturday looking at cars doesn't win my any brownie pointsNice.
How did the meet up go ?![]()
