EV general discussion

Twenty thousand euro for a 2008 S-Class?! I know European cars are more expensive but...woah
Was only looking at S500s, but yeah pretty much.
Early W222s (2014) start at just under €25,000 for the cheapest and those are 350s on 150k miles.

Well if money was no object, I'd buy an S600 Maybach, but unfortunately tax & insurance are a little pricey.
BMW i3 running costs:
Fuel: €0
Servicing: Brake fluid every 24 months
Registration tax: €0
Annual road tax: €0

For just under €20,000 (equivalent cost), I can get a 2008 S500L.
Registration tax: €2,373.26
Annual road tax: €3,879.58

Damn, really should've gone with that S500 right?

So we're back to what we already know - it isn't the i3 itself that's so good for commuting, it's the exceptionally favourable tax treatment they get. Because if it wasn't for that tax situation you wouldn't bother would you?

Here in the UK (this is ocuk after all), an S350d would cost under £200 a year to tax, there is no registration tax and it would use fairly low amounts of fuel. I'm not seriously suggesting an S Class as an alternative, merely illustrating how there are many many better cars to commute in than an i3 and that it's the tax situation that makes the disadvantages worth it.

The Germans can do it, but it’s a real shame that BMW and Mercedes don’t seem to be on the bandwagon. The Taycan for example is a beautiful car as you’d expect from Porsche - the perfect EV if you can go the price of one.

The i3 (as long as it is a high spec model to make it feel at least slightly like a real BMW) seems like a fun cheap way to have an EV from a respectable brand to me, and the REX means that it’s genuinely a usable thing (I’d never charge away from home, I never stop at services etc, no interest in public charging at all).

There are some other cheap EVs around, I noticed for example that the Ioniq 88kw models are cheaper than a reasonable i3 at 11-12k for a 2017 example - good proposition if you are not insistent on German/higher end cars....probably make the i3 look a bit rubbish on paper.
The perfect EV? Not if you're actually after an EV. It's pretty much the antithesis of what an EV should be :p

If you can get over the (irrelevant) need for a German brand, there's many better options than your i3.

perfect EV - if its your money and a 2nd hand buy , considering good residuals - maybe

Yes, catching up, that's interesting

An S350d would use a considerable amount of fuel in stop-start town traffic from cold and you know it. Also a good commuting tool should be good VFM and cheap to run.
Would a 5.5 V8 even warm up properly on a cold day on a 12-mile commute at low speeds? Big luxobarges aren't really made for town driving are they? Also parking an LWB S is a ballache.

Can you blame him? Japanese interiors are shocking, and you get 00's Merc switchgear in a £100k Tesla. Or a Knight Rider steering wheel..

I do well know it, as I used to commute 12 miles a day in a 3 litre diesel auto myself. It barley managed 20mpg.

And still a tank could last a month, because 12 miles isn't very far and even with a not very efficient car doesn't cost much in fuel.

So, tax incentives aside (I don't doubt that for you this makes the i3 very compelling) the list of better cars than an i3 for this commute is large.

Even if you limited it to electric BMW's it's still isn't the best, a 330e would do it on electric power alone and be a nicer car.

Has jez driven one yet ?
I’ve actually not (:p), but I have been a passenger in many...the client which I am working at have loads of them as pool cars which they use for hopping between their sites. A colleague of mine also recently bought one which he reckons is a bit of a hoot (he has it alongside a couple of normal decent cars).

I think that they are pretty funny, In a toy sense, it’s not as if it will lose any money as the margins between trade and even private on these seem fairly wide. No plans to ditch my existing cars for one either, the thing wouldn’t be acceptable for family use...

I struggle to think of any other way to have a go with an EV?

i3 is very nice. Only got to drive it the very short drive home as needed to dash back due to workmen suddenly deciding they could do some work. Was used to it in no time, easy to drive. Instant torque is very nice! Need to go back and collect it later as have had to park it down the road to keep my driveway clear.
Wall charger being fitted this coming Sat hopefully, just awaiting confirmation. I was expecting 4 weeks+ given how long everything seems to be taking at the moment here, so just over a week from making contact, not bad at all.

Decided on this over a GR Yaris, blimmin' heck.

If only tesla did battery management for electric scooters -
Zoomer was pushing his electric scooter in the cold weather today, usually he's obstructing everyone, at speed, during daily exercise period;
I guess this is a common problem for winter scooter use.

(Is anyone shorting bitcoin then ?)
