EV general discussion

You would like an EV but don't have driveway parking for charging. The Oxford council are trialling this neat solution. Could be easily rolled out across the rest of the UK.

Looks perfectly reasonable and cheap to install. I’m sure in time there will be lots of parking wars/cones ‘reserving’ the spaces but nothing new there?

And in the same way it's pretty stupid to completely fill a petrol or diesel tank unless you are going to do a long journey and need all that range.

I usually fill my petrol e class to about 90% full

What? This has to be the oddest post in this thread so far. Why do anything but fill the tank?

don't you always look at fill and think I'll put £50/£60.. pounds worth in, or a specific litre count, as opposed to dealing with poor pump cut-offs

Looks like they have a parking type permit on their wall
,
seems it just certifies it as a legit install https://www.tsu.ox.ac.uk/pubs/2019-GULO-1.pdf

yes >year in, wonder what the experience has been for availibility, especially if everyone pays for a limited availibility permit anyway

Just wait for the click, full tank, done. Means you can enter data in apps etc so you have a better feel for fuel consumption and over a year stop less.

Back to EV:
I parked at Asda for an 1hr last night. Had I gone with a full battery I wouldn’t have got the free energy so there’s another benefit of only charging to 88%. :D

Interestingly 2 bays were ice’d Ioniq in the third and a chap waiting in the 4th in a old Japanese crossover, I just pulled up and indicated and he left with no drama.

Had the Ohme fitted and put the car on charge. I'm trying to figure out now why it doesn't seem to go over 3.8kw charge rate, which is 4.3kwh (both shown on the OHme charger screen)

No just fill the entire tank. The only time I don't is if it's a courtesy car where you have to replace what you've used.

Mine is ramping up slow in this cold but gets to 7.1kW ish. I assume yours shows 32A on the screen before you plug in aswell?

Screenshot of it currently on charge. Battery charge is quite high now. Should read the manual I suppose :). THis is for the i3 which was at 74% to begin with. I changed one setting in the car as it was on low. Mode 2 charge current i think it was called, but didnt put it on max, just raised it to Reduced instead of Low).

begs the question , of what is the charging efficiency if you fill up when it is cold & battery is cold., ie. do you loose some immediately as heat
(it's like the converse of benefit of topping up your ICE when it is cold)

Looks like it’s set to 32A odd.

EDIT: oh I see setting in the car you can change.

Have you set the rate to a restricted (green setting/gentle on battery) in the Ohme app?

Its more that it’s throttled in some cases.

Yep, both prefer green energy and gentle on battery were enabled and stopped charging now as fully charged. Changed them both for now and will carry on checking over a number of days and try changing the Mode 2 charge setting to max in the car menu too. Mode 1 I believe is for the 3 pin charger and mode 2 for the wall charger.

Once you've disabled those options (in the Ohme app) the rate should go back to normal/full speed. Obviously with such a small battery, unless you are in a hurry or have a very small window of time to charge the lower rate will have little effect.

Yep, and I'll always be leaving it on charge anyway when not using it. I'll enable the gentle option again once happy everything working as I think it should.

Good on battery tends to mean charge to full as late as possible to minimise calender aging. Guess slower rates on the smaller batteries is beneficial though to keep that C rate down.
