Pontins black lists people with common Irish surnames.

Knew they'd be a thread on this when I saw the article this morning. I'd honestly never heard of travellers until I saw a thread bashing them a while back, never knew they were so hated and I still find it baffling that it's widely acceptable to **** on a race of people.
Do you ever drive past a field and wonder why the owner has dragged a huge rock in front of the entrance? It's to stop travellers setting up camp there.

You lose

I do wonder how much life the phrase ‘blacklist’ has left in it. I have no idea of it’s origins but it seems ripe for the chopping block in this day and age.

Just came to mind when I was looking at the headline - I think I always hunt for irony when I read the Daily Mail :p

Blacklist and whitelist are being discouraged in a lot of open source projects already.

Wikipedia suggests it was being used in England as early as 1639. I'm fairly sure there were no black people in the country back then. So it doesn't seem to be related to being negative about black people. Throughout my life I had assumed it originated from "black sheep of the family", which in turn literally comes from the fact one sheep can sometimes be born with black wool.

But that would be a positive thing?

Because

Because the police do **** all about troublemakers, so people and companies take it into their own hands to avoid trouble.

This isn't me saying it's right that Pontins did this, it's not, it's a dig at the police for not doing enough to support businesses and communities.

The police do bugger all because they know it's a waste of time. Why spend hours and hours doing paperwork when you know full well they will get away with it. That, and the fact theres no money in it for them.

Your saying black list came from black sheep etc.

But in a diverse world where we celebrate differences, wouldn't a black sheep and then list then be the good things and a white list the bad things?
I don't care which way round it is; whether black/white are negative/positive or positive/negative. I also don't think many black people care either. But it seems important to those who get easily offended on others behalf.

Damn, we use those terms when configuring firewalls. Will have to come up with something new.

If they are banning "travelers" they must have a reason to. People aren't going to ban customers for no reason.

They do seem to take a crimewave with them everywhere they go. When police don't do anything people start taking matters in to their own hands, that's the way it goes.

oh cool, i'm a race then :)

There's a difference between a race and an ethnicity.

I as many can tell you what a lot of the proper gypsies are like as they have invaded the town I grew up in pretty much.
They are for the majority a terrible bunch of people. Imagine chavs but worse.
They have no rules or manners and constantly imtemidate people and look for fights, the police are scared of them.

In some countries if they're challenged they defecate and throw it at people.

Word is older.

The concept itself predates speech and writing though and is still built into our biology (fear of the dark, night terrors, circadian rhythm, etc).

Thinking logically it makes sense that black is used for "bad" and white for "good" when night time was a more dangerous time and early superstitious cultures believed that spirits came out at night, etc.

Yes, you just have to look at the history and lore of Samhain [Hallowe'en] and the correlation between the dark half of the year and the light half. Dark has always meant "death" and light "life" because it relates to the wheel of the year, seasons and the harvest.

In fact absolutely everything lore and religion-based in the West [and maybe elsewhere] comes down to the harvest in some way.

I lose what? I don’t understand. I’ve asked for an explanation.

That article clearly shows police were not afraid, they just didn’t have the resources to deal with 100 criminals. In fact one unit alone blocked the entrance until he was needed else where to deal with a knife wielding mad man. This is more of an indictment of woeful police numbers and resources than is it any fear.

I’m asking for his opinion the police were scared in his area, and you’ve posted a Daily Mail article.
