Question about oil

Hi all. I've had the oil light come on in the car. The Mrs popped to Tesco petrol station earlier and they recommended this particular one, but after double checking online I'm not certain that it's the correct oil for it? It's a VW Golf TDI, the reg is FG53 YTH. Would anybody with more knowledge than me be able to tell me if this is suitable to put into the car?

Thanks for any help and replys. :)

I can't seem to embed the picture but I've posted a link below. Thanks.

The most important thing is to use an oil of the correct viscosity. VW505 01 is 5W30
The 505 01 rating is a long life anti sludge standard.
I would suggest using this at the regular oil change period, however for a top up personally I wouldn’t worry too much about OPs choice.

Because it doesn’t conform to VW 505 01 apparently.
Why are you rolling your eyes. VW developed a spec for this engine with additional testing.

OP asked for advice. I replied. You seem to want to offer alternative advice, but for what reason ?

Why are you rolling your eyes.

Personally don’t think it’s going to matter.
(See above).
The Tesco oil is certainly better than the light coming on, which is very low.

I personally think extended service intervals are poppycock anyway.
I try to change my oil at around 6000 miles, it does no harm.

moved it, didn’t mean to offend

505 01 is a fixed service interval spec of 1y or 15k km. 507 00 is long life.

I know it does matter, this isn't about opinions or 'ive never had a problem so its fine'. Ive seen camshafts of engines from failing oils that didn't protect the engine.

If 15k isn’t long life I don’t know what is.
In a diesel?

It’s relative where Volkswagen have a specific long life spec which will do up to 30k km. And the one you talk about isn’t a long life spec. It’s not about your opinion of what is ‘long life’.

And using a crap oil every 6,000 miles isnt the best idea either

9k miles doesn't seem like an overly long time to run oil in a car, my bike is 6k.

misread KM vs Miles.
Even so that’s what the VW rating is for.
That the oil will not sludge up in that time when used in a VW engine.
I was a Castrol laboratory worker for 16 years.

VW put their own label on something, it will just be re-branded oil from one of the big suppliers which you can buy off the shelf.

Use some the same spec or better.

It will have been tested in a VW engine on a bench.
Our testing facility was in Pangbourne.
BP bought Castrol and closed us down.
Castrol oils where BMW rated from memory.
I remember us doing the 1 litre top up pack for the M3.

Doesn't it all depend on car use too? So say you live in a colder/hotter climate? How long you use the car for, short/long runs?

Not a car, but with a lawnmower I've used the wrong oil for 3 years and it's still going like a new engine. It does in one day what it's supposed to in 1 year as it's not a professional engine.

Average lawn cuts per year is 15. My mowers do more than that per day :D so my mowers engine is like, 1000 year old ?

Anyway, I'm no oil expert but it should be 10w30 and I use 5w30. Reason I use the 5w30 is because it's the same as my van hahaha.
