1150GS is the bike I probably regret selling the most. By far the most comfortable seat. Gearbox was the epitome of agricultural when you hear that term thrown around. A good few false neutrals but it did the job and like the rest of the bike, felt like it would survive the apocalypse.
It had an aftermarket collection of LED upgraded and added lights and the effect was by far and away the most effective I've had on any car or bike, without it it glaring oncoming traffic. I've never been able to replicate this on any other bike since.

The 1200GSA was bigger and heavier, but far smoother in terms of engine, gearbox and ride. That said, it felt sanitised to me and not as enjoyable. The prospect of big bills with all the electronics always loomed in the background. When I lost a lot of weight I found my ability to manage it at low speeds and junctions was borderline dangerous so it went.

The Explorer 1200 was lovely, but the triple was a kind on 'meh' between the rev happy IL4 and grunt of a twin. Exactly what you'd expect but I didn't get on with it. The rest of the bike was good and comfortable, but felt a bit more cobbled together generally than the very slick BMW's.

Of the 3, I'd still consider going back to the 1150GS in the future, not the others.

Yeah, I should have sorted the problems out with it rather than making a rush decision and giving it away at auction.

It has been through a few hands since then but the latest owner tracked me down via Facebook! It is now running all sorts of pointless stuff like Anti-Lag and has a shed load of mods on it. No MOT since November though so I wonder if it is now off the road for good.

To be fair, as it was my first car, and also handed down to me by my Grandad when he became to ill to drive it anymore, I do have fond memories of it. Probably why I had it for 5 1/2 years!

I've never owned anything with the N52 in, but the M54 was a great engine.

For it's time it was smooth and offered great performance. It was also surprisingly economical. Other than the famed cooling system issues it wasn't much of a drama mechanically either and most things engine wise were fairly easily fixed. The N52 was more powerful - though much of this power came as the result of a higher rev limit so in more sporty car it was great, in an executive saloon perhaps not as much of an improvement over the M54 as you'd have wanted. But I understand it to be fundamentally reliable.

The downside I can see with the n52 is it’s magnesium construction.
The M54 is a cast iron block I think?
Makes it easier for future reconditioning work.

Some great lists here. I've been driving since 1995 but didn't actually own my own car until 2002. My list is short:

The only time I've bought new was the Citroen. Had loads of issues with it so got rid after 2 years and will never buy Citroen again. Everything else so far I've kept for 5+ years each time. Coming up to 3yrs with the Merc.
 
doubt my memory is that good been driving since 79 but regularly used to get through 10 or so cars a year :) its what you did innit:)

Bought cheap and then moved on, yes.
I could have had far more than I have I guess.
