Could high prices be here to stay?

Increases in complexity and general inflation mean that everything electronic/mechanical has increased in price over the last decade. Back then, even flagship cards were fairly simple by today's standards. There's at least five times more parts on today's cards.
Flagship phones were a few hundred pounds rather than over a thousand and even though they are loss leaders, consoles are three times what they used to cost.

Yes they are "simple" by today's standard but they weren't simple back in their day. They were just as complex to design and construct back then with the technology available at the time.

Technology is supposed to become better for the same cost else it becomes pointless as you never get progression.

Consoles aren't bad for the price though considering you're getting an 8 core CPU a GPU with 40/52 CUs, 16gbs of GDDR6, 1tb nvme storage, power supply, case, Blu-Ray player, controller etc all for 450 quid while you can't even get a 40CU GPU for that these days.

The issue with Gpus especially at the lower end is we now have cards like the 3060 going for more than the 2070 super but it isn't even as powerful so it a regression in performance terms.

This is where they bust out ray tracing and try to beguile you with new must have features. Yes I guess that has improved but as you have pointed out in this example its not really a leap per se. Maybe nvidia knew this around pascal and had to pump resources in - then with the AI division kill two birds with one stone and brute the tensor cores. This way DLSS can pull them out of the hole when the going gets tough.

RGB is much more complex on modern cards compared to 10 years ago, AIB partners have got to increase prices to cover that added complexity that gamers insist upon

Thousands of people spend over £1000 on the newest phone every year or two with arguably smaller upgrades
Those same people complain that high end GPUs cost over £500

I'd rather a high end GPU than a new phone every year so even though I'm unhappy about prices climbing, I am willing to pay them because gaming is my hobby

same with the gpu coolers themselves, they look much more gamery now all this stuff has extra costs

imagine if they gave us the option to just buy the pcb with nothing else, it would cost 50% less

My wife had a lateral flow test report it negative, the day after she had a positive pcr one.... and yes she did have covid and was ill

same with Kelly she has had long covid since and despite what some people say I wouldnt wish that on a 40 year old

Well if they are it would probably be the death of pc gaming, being doing it for what 30 years but when a entry level gfx starts to cost a grand or more I'll just start to do other stuff. Can't imagine many parents buying 2k plus pc's when a console will cost 500.. Or Adults either

Yes as long as stupid people continue to buy at stupid prices. There's a lot of people still waiting to get flagship cards, that's a lot of inflated sales both for Nvidia/AMD and all the retailers.

right now I'm saying the same about the housing market where I live, house prices have jumped 40% in one year so many stupid people paint stupid prices

The thing with houses are if other people down the line are also willing to pay stupid prices then its ok, as you will only gain. You also have the FOMO factor.

For one small sign of crazy high prices abating maybe a little bit is this well known high-street retailer of used goods finally having GPUs in stock if you filter by stock = available online.

Prices are still crazy with even ancient cards going for over a hundred, but the mere fact that some things are in stock implies that the total shortage of everything is nearing the end; hopefully availability will lead to prices coming back towards normal

Aren't there these 'luxury' phone brands who make oligarch edition of phones by taking ordinary phone and do crazy things like add gold or a sapphire screen and other such 'enhancements' to make them look like tasteless bling only oligarchs would buy. RGB seems to be a similar thing.

I don't even own a smartphone I'm doing it right, right?!

If prices stay stupidly high like they are then i will just completely abandon PC gaming. Been a PC Gamer for 25 years, but i aint paying 1000 quid for a video card. Ill just stick to PS5.

Irresistible at those prices

Anyone ever heard the saying, a fool and his money are easily parted, IMO applies in this case, would rather get a 1030, play old games and wait to buy something cheaper, even if I had no current GPU

I'm just resigned to fact that current price levels are preventing me from upgrading.
May even consider dropping back to 1080p high refresh gaming which is far easier to drive and then forget about this graphics card madness for a year or two.

I'll see how the 3080ti launch goes, but I expect it will be complete farce.
