ULEZ+London = loss for some, win for some ?

I live just outside the new ULEZ zone, but regularly drive into it for lunch, dinner, markets etc. Being south of the river, public transport isn't great unless you're actually going into the City.

I'm all for cleaner air in and around London, I think even where I live there are junctions frequented by busses and lorries that just permanently choke you with exhaust fumes.

However, I'm not entirely convinced that my 2014 C-Class equipped with a DPF is really a large contributor to the problem.

I was already considering a change, and will probably do so to a Petrol car before October. I can't see it being sold any cheaper just because of ULEZ, though. Thanks to the internet, car adverts are national and I don't think I've ever sold a car to someone closer than 1-2 hours away.

I wouldn't buy a used car from a city anyway.

Cars are judged by by age and mileage, but mileage is an odd figure really.

To put that into context, the last 3 hours I've driven my car I covered about 140 miles.

3 hours driving in a city, god knows, maybe half that? Less?

Plus those city miles are higher wear on everything.

Boats clock up running hours, if they did the same for cars I think it would really be an eye opener.

I would agree, I’ve got a rule to never buy a used car that’s been used within the inner boroughs either. It takes an hour to drive 5 miles through endless stop/starts and road humps, and you need to drive quite aggressively to keep pace compared to the regions, so after 60k the clutch, suspension etc are shagged. Outer boroughts not so much, but still wouldn’t risk it.

I tend to pick up 1-2 owner cars from the countryside, and bring it to London to end its life.

Countryside cars aren't always the best. Sometimes they are left in a barn :/

I don't think city driving is hard on the suspension though. More clutch, gearbox, engine. B road commutes are harder on suspension, but suspension parts are mostly cheap.

My dads affected by this. He’s in his 70’s but uses his sprinter for a bit of work. He’s not eligible for scrappage schemes, so he’s a bit stuffed really. He’s not going to get enough for 2006 sprinter to buy a ULEZ compliant van of same size.

Stop accepting jobs inside London I guess. To much hasstle anyway on top of parking, traffic and the other already existing BS.

Clarkson was right. Everything you can do in the countryside you can't do in London :p

But he lives in London and it’s his sole vehicle

Gf needs to sell her 2012 520d as she's juat outside the zone but drives in daily. I did ask her to sell sooner rather than later, but still not done. On top of that, used car prices are still going up. I can juatbimagine her trading it in for a low value at the last minute.

I thought 2012 520d were exempt? From Jan 2012+ from what I read?

you've still got to pay the congestion charge , at what £11.5/day , and, for pure battery cars too post 2025,
so having a battery car in the interim would be good, one of those vw e-go at £170p/m would nearly pay for itself.

2025, only 3 years away and then everyone is screwed. I think it will harm business in London, it's already hard enough to get people to travel in.

The congestion charge is only in Central London. That's not a concern, as most will rarely drive into Central London because it's hell.

The ULEZ stretching to North and South circulars impacts a lot more people!

yes I see what you're saying.

Having a non-compliant car, & planning london visits, seems I'd even have to take care of my park at brent cross take tube type strategy

The North Circular Road is outside of the ULEZ. The Brent Cross Interchange is outside of the zone but the exit for Hendon Way, southbound, is inside the zone. Drivers approaching central London from Hendon Way should exit onto the North Circular Road.

Please don't forget the diesel surcharge you get for parking in certain boroughs too. Used my RingGo account for family who came around the other day and got shafted even though it was euro 6.
