Is a 10 second car considered fast by 2021 standards?

Well said.

There seems to be a lot of people who are obsessed with straight line 0-60 and quarter mile times, despite most of that time being related to traction off the line and launch control, which isn't reflective of normal, or even spirited, driving :(

This is why the comments on a lot of videos about older sports/supercars are full of people arguing eg a Ferrari 355 is rubbish and you should buy a Golf R instead :(

Never owned a car above 200BHP and I dont think I ever will. 200BHP is more than enough for our roads or at least where I live anyway. I would think differently if I lived in the hills of Scotland or something.

I've always loved high revving cars like the Toyota Yamaha engines and Honda DOHC VTEC engines they were always great fun to thrash. Unfortunately I have to settle for a 140BHP 1.8 VTEC engine in a big estate which is still NA and revvy but not any fun at all. I cant wait to get something in the future that's small and fun to drive again. But yeah, straight line performance has never really interested me.

Unfortunately those kind of people are generally beyond educating, I’ve said it many of time why I enjoy the S2000 so much as like a 355 it’s a slow car based on modern standards but what makes a great car is so much more than how fast it is or not.

When I got the 458 it was the slowest car out of everything test drove but what so many people don’t realise is fast does not equal fun and the Ferrari was more alive at 50mph in my hands than the Huracan was at 100+ and as I’ve got older and grown up I’ve come to realise it’s more about the fun of driving for myself and the 458 delivers on that and where it also delivers is simply how special it feels and how much of an occasion it is to drive and any other marque of car will simply fail to even come close to that.

I had a Golf R it was mighty fast but it was also boring and it was soon sold.

My car collection is about fun to drive and not about the numbers and in my head for those arguing a ten second car is anything that traps starting with a ten whether that be 10.00 or 10.99 it’s still a ten second car.

For those who just want on paper numbers buy a McLaren MP4-12C and tune it and you’ve got a 9s car for not much money but also a car that is not for me that fun to drive.

With age comes hair in all the wrong places

I mean wisdom

It is also why people with a Tesla who want to tell me their car is faster than my car make me smile. If that’s all that matters, which seems to be the case for those Top Trump dreamers or those with it on their car list, that’s an indication that motoring has become a spreadsheet thing. At least a Ring time takes into account more of the elements….or more columns on a spreadsheet perhaps.

This 100% Drive me mmental how the world is number crazy now, surely why petrol heads love our cars is the fun and smiles it gives. My RX8 was perfect example, slow and low powered by todays statndards but for sheer fun it blows my SRT8 into the weeds. Horses for courses but it does annoy me how people are so power crazy now... all stemmed from the BMW/Audi battle and it's got right out of hand.

I'd also add, pumping mega power through these small 2 litre engines, you'll be lucky to see any of them reach 150k-200k... certain on original parts, they're all so over powered and stressed and with todays poor quality materials...

only 10.8 secs for this early 90's slouch ....

Same 0-100 time as my car. Crazy world

Tech moves on, a 911 turbo from the 80s is now the same power as a hot hatch, although I do think adding more power is the easiest metric for manufacturers to sell cars. Can't imagine any releasing a new model with less power than its predessor, and the cycle continues up.

The leaps made in the last 5-6 years are massive I feel. 0-60 around 5 seconds was super car fast into the late 2000's we forget.

Leaps in performance yes... not really in tech though?

... it's the decision to downsize engines and slap turbos on everything which kinda annoys me a lot tbh... nothing really incredibly advanced for me, remember the old Ren 5 Turbo, 1.4 engine with a Turbo... it's just nowadays we've get better control over those Turbo's etc, but if we get this down to basics... we now have cars that are no where near as reliable, don't last as long but small compact cheap to make engines with turbos (on everyday car, not exotica)... and we live in a lease world where 95% of the public don't care about how it lasts just how fast it it now while they own it... I mean the amount of Ecotech crap that's failing is incredible, those engines are absolutely appalling nowadays but they have big power for their size... once again all paper figures and BS... but imho, the engines of today, taking performance out the equation, mainstream car engines now are not very good at all. Just my opinion... Hyundai are bad, chrysler are appalling, BMW in the last 15+ years have some appalling failures... Fords are a mess, Vauxhall van engines needing rebuilds... there's probably only Toyota and Honda still making what I would class as quality engines built to last.too much tech, poor quality components and a need to make a profit with cars and parts being built in poor quality environments/people etc.

Launch control, four wheel drive, computer controlled power distribution are bigger components of modern performance than just power.

When we have 1500kgs hot hatches with 400bhp out accelerating 1380kgs 380bhp 996 GT3's significantly it's not all about turbos.

Yeah good point, but without the power, you can have all the electrics you want, it won't go down the strip in 12s but yeah get your point. Leaps there, but leaps that cause failures hahaha... just more and more to go wrong. You slap 300bhp+ in ANY car whether it's got electronics or not and it'll shift!

Just think tech is now spoiling the whole driving experience... muppet gets in the car does it all for him, launch like you say, traction... esp... fancy trickery... personally just believe there's more to it all than tech... I prefer the old days with slower cars, deffo mroe fun
