Hamilton really needed to be a point ahead, because it's still the same situation that Max could take Hamilton out and win on a countback of race wins. If Hamilton was a point ahead, then Max would have to beat him on track, both of them crashing off wouldn't be enough. Shame Bottas couldn't keep P2, but then he never does.
