I've been offered a RX 6800 for a reasonable price of £650,

however it has been used for Crypto mining for 1 year, i'm worried about the longevity of it,

after selling my 3060Ti it won't cost me much more on top,

Will there be a performance determent, or any negative impact due to mining?

Thanks!

Difficult to say. How well do you know the seller? Did they undervolt and keep temps in check? If so it might be okay but I doubt anyone can give you a concrete answer either way.

It's a triple fan cooler ~( gigabyte ~) he reckons he kept it in low temps, Either way i'll be going for it, big upgrade i suppose over the 3060Ti, hopefully it matches the 6750xt refresh at least

Furry muff, never heard of that GPU though. :)

Linus did a video on this a few months ago. No discernible difference in performance from a mining card to a normally used one that they could find. As said most cards are undervolted to control temps.

I have an RX 6800 which I've been mining on since April - I'd have no qualms about buying one which has been run the same as mine (big case with plenty of airflow, highly undervolted, fans at 70% max, temperature at 62c max), I've not noticed any deterioration in performance while gaming, or increase in noise/temperatures etc.

However as @LtMatt says, you would only have the seller's word to go on about how it has been looked after. Unless it's someone you know well, if they are local then it might be worth getting them to show you it running while it's mining.

yeah, tends to be fairly black and white, either it works or it doesn't so you wouldn't see any noticeable drop in performance... you might see blue smoke and or black screens, or it will work perfectly

I think with the current situation you’d assume that all second hand cards have been mining. The only difference is whether the seller owns up to it or not! Personally it wouldn’t bother me. I’ve a 1070 in my daughter’s PC that I bought from a miner a couple of years ago and it’s never given any problems.

Judging from the seller I bought a 1080 Ti from back in 2018 the card had likely been mined on (they had sold a fair number of cards so I think it's a reasonable assumption to make). It worked perfectly for the 18 months I had it and once I sold it on I haven't heard that it's had any issues.

Personally I'd be comfortable buying cards I know have been mined on for that period of time. Even if it were to fail there's no way to really know whether that was in any way related to it's previous use.

Should be a nice upgrade from the 3060 Ti too, enjoy!

£650 i just wouldn't do it, the RRP on that card is £550, you're paying a £100 premium for a card that spent a year mining, the card might be healthy but its still a year old. Its a £450 card and even that is too much. In normal times it would be on sale for £400 tops.

Prices are gradually coming down, that card is on sale because Cryptomining is slowly in decline. Plus Intel are coming out with new GPU's soon, they will flood the market which will drag down the price of all other new cards.

Wait a bit.

All strong points, I may end up doing just this .. having said that i don't want to miss out on the dip..

While this is a good point, I assume the OP's 3060ti will also decline in value.

I guess it's all relative, but £650 for a used card with no direct warranty? I don't even care if it's been used for mining, no thank you. But, do I think it will survive the warranty period, or until you sell it on, yeah I do.

One thing to watch out for, is that just because the card shows no error when mining or running benchmarks, doesn't mean it'll remain stable for long gaming sessions. There's plenty of decent ex-mining cards, but there's also more than a few shady sellers.

If I was a betting man, I'd say prices will keep dropping now, at least until June, so I'd rather wait it out.

test it, go to the sellers location and ask to check the temps, clocks etc to see if it's running the same as a new one.

Buying a 2nd gpu is ok, but buying it without testing and checking it from a random person over the internet would just be dumb in todays world
