Erdogan: There are countries in Europe who are now settled on lands who previously were turkish(Ottoman).

Mark my words, next war on europe will be the Greek-Turkish war.

Just to be clear, the CCM doesn't "ban" cluster bombs, it only bans a few very specific cluster bombs based on sub-munition size/weight and fusing system. In fact the UK still uses quite a few "unbanned" cluster munitions as the ones we use fall juuuuust outside the scope of the CCM. So for example we still use the M270 MLRS rocket system which drops almost 8,000 sub-munitions per vehicle and no-one complains.

The reason we still justify the use of certain cluster munitions is that their design makes them the most effective weapon for killing large numbers of infantry in the open or destroying large numbers of soft-skin vehicles.
Regardless we wouldn't be dropping them in civilian occupied areas. This is what Russia is doing.

The risk is too high. He should remain in Ukraine, but stay hidden at all times. He has proven his point that the government still stands, that's enough.

I felt the same but he feels what he is doing to boost moral of the people defending and prolonging the take-over is the only chance they have. Maybe he is right, hopefully he is.

Bit rich for him to claim that when Istanbul was Constantinople and a big chunk of their eastern coastline used to be Greek towns and villages.

Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of Russia: (Dmitry Medvedev)

MEDVEDEV: UNCONCERNED ABOUT PERSONAL PENALTIES ON HIM, CLAIMING THAT HE AND HIS FAMILY HAVE NO FOREIGN FINANCIAL ACCOUNTS OR PROPERTY.
MEDVEDEV: SANCTIONS HELP RUSSIA UNITE
MEDVEDEV: RUSSIA HAS THE OPTION OF REJECTING STRATEGIC STABILITY NEGOTIATIONS WITH THE US AND REFUSING TO SIGN A NEW ARMS CONTROL TREATY.
MEDVEDEV: DIPLOMATIC CONNECTIONS AREN'T 'ESPECIALLY NEEDED.'
MEDVEDEV: 'IT'S TIME TO PADLOCK THE EMBASSIES'
MEDVEDEV: CONDEMNS DECISION BY COUNCIL OF EUROPE TO SUSPEND RUSSIAN MEMBERSHIP, DESCRIBES DECISION AS 'UNFAIR'
MEDVEDEV: COULD BE A GOOD REASON TO SLAM THE DOOR ON THE COUNCIL FOREVER

MEDVEDEV:[SUSPENSION OF MEMBERSHIP] COULD BE AN OPPORTUNITY TO RESTORE THE DEATH PENALTY IN RUSSIA

If we're all claiming old territory then should the UK put a request in to have the USA (well parts) back.

Has covid reduced the mental capacity of world leaders or something

America would steam roll Russia, it would be embarrassing actually, Russians are complete amateurs when it come's to warfighting.

You wonder though, what precautions are Ukraine's security services taking to protect their president?

Probably has an armoured vehicle next to him at all times when he's not in the protection of a bunker/hardened building along with presumably scouts/snipers ensuring the area is at least mildly safe.

If he is just winging it then... well not sure my respect can go much higher.

ORLY???

Jono8 has correctly posted eariler that the USA alone could beat Russia, you seemed to think that isn't the case and that only with NATO would there be a "chance", which didn't seem to be the "exact opposite" at all.

Exactly in a purely CONVENTIONAL WAR the US on its own with no help, might win, but unlikely.

In a purely conventional war all of NATO against Russia would most likely win.

However.

In both those scenarios it would NEVER be purely conventional as Russia would escalate early, not caring about retaliation, only caring about obliterating as much of the west as possible on the way.

Holy ****, I'd thought the Russian military had modernized/become at least a bit more professional by now (see below for the the inside of an intact BMP, total **** show, like a teenager's bedroom).

But this bit, this is like the nonsense they were pulling in Chechnya - they had a farce in the Chechen wars where some Russian solders deployed there were selling arms to the locals which where then used in the insurgency against them... (I guess the average Russian conscript doesn't care as we can see in the video when they're casually talking to people). But I've seen this allegation a few times, claims from Belarus that various Russian soldiers sold their fuel to Belarussian locals! FFS!

Another claim here dating back to the 19th of February, which perhaps explains these videos:

"I've seen with my own eyes the movement of tracked military vehicles on the streets of the city," said a resident of the Belarusian town of Khoyniki, in the southeastern corner of the country not far from the Ukrainian border, when asked about the Russian forces in his country for joint military exercises.

"The soldiers have settled in the surrounding forests," the local, who asked not to be identified, added. "They drink a lot and sell a lot of their diesel fuel. They are living in tents."

Did people really expect Russia to steamroll in and take Ukraine in 24 hours? It took over a month for the armed forces to get to Baghdad back in 2003 for example and Ukraine is 1.5 times bigger.

And the US can't beat anyone in a war they've lost every one, they're terrible.

ok I'll bite. Both sides have nukes so how exactly do you think that would go down? I think that wouldn't be good for the planet let alone Russians or Americans.

Good lefty video on this. They do admit that American's only get to hear about European countries when they are at war :) I mean this thread of moving at such pace it's almost pointless we even posting anything but hey.

Having a millionaire, world champion boxer in the auxiliaries is probably good for morale as well.

The US easily beat the Iraqi military twice, occupying a country is a completely different issue.

I don't think you understand the losses they've taken here though, look at how many US troops were killed in the entire initial invasion of Iraq over several days, the Russians lost a similar amount when that single aircraft went down, they've lost hundreds of armoured vehicles and dozens of tanks... and individual soldiers killed or captured are probably getting into the low thousands by now.

The US/UK faced nothing of the sort in terms of losses and certainly didn't have groups of soldiers, isolated on the roadside chatting to Iraqi civilians after they'd been stranded with no fuel or Infantry fighting vehicles simply abandoned because of the same.

It's like a bad Vietnam except they don't have the money or industrial might to sustain it, they probably could take Kyiv and other cities if they throw lots of resources at it but sustaining this campaign if the Ukrainians keep on resisting is going to be a nightmare for them.
