Classic war doctrine. Encircle and let it cook.
20km range on artillery
Nothing in .....
Hopefully refugees out......
Give it a month.
Good luck Kyiv.

I'd suspect Kyiv maybe able to hold on longer than the Russian population if we're looking at a months timescale.

It feels like they only maintain the vehicles used in the large parades... It seems the Russian armed forces are in the quantity over quality camp from a lot of these instances we've been seeing with regards to dumped vehicles, desertions, surrender, generals selling their full and ammo off at the border etc etc. It makes me question if they are telling porkies with regards to their nuke count too. (Obviously I'm not saying they aren't a nuclear threat though.)

Its an institutional problem they have been trying to fix for the last 20 years but its still not working. They historically focused on a professional officer class and anything below were viewed as drones/cannon fodder. Strangely enough most officers in that environment dont want to get their hands dirty maintaining equipment.

edit: its also worth noting the massive problem Russia faces with corruption in the senior levels of its military - why spend money on maintenance / logistics when you can pocket the money and live a life of luxury?

ooof, anyone tuning in? ;)

Russian schoolchildren to learn about war's 'necessity'

Russia's education ministry has announced that schoolchildren throughout the nation will be given a virtual lesson on "why the liberation mission in Ukraine is a necessity".

The broadcasted instruction will take place at 12:00 Moscow time (09:00GMT) on Thursday.

Viewers will be taught "about the danger Nato represents to our country" and "why Russia stood up for the protection of the civilians of the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics".

A statement on the ministry's Facebook page said children will also learn "how to distinguish the truth from lies in the huge stream of information, photos and videos that are flooding the internet today".

Russia went through a brief workers revolution going from Tsar / officer class / peasant to President / officer class / peasant. There are a few million educated westernised people however the generality is valid.

...and if we had your preferred Momentum controlled Corbyn government they'd probably be sanctioning Ukraine and sending weapons to Russia..

But we don't. I'm no fan of Corbyn at all, but he's not in power. It seems like the people who are in power are talking tough on sanctions when the reality is not what it seems. I don't feel particularly good about that, do you?

Remember Brexit? It achieves the opposite of everything that resulted from Brexit.

EU membership = strength in numbers. There's no way Putin would attack an EU member.
Then they'd only have to worry about NATO members I suppose? After all EU membership hasn't put Turkey off occupying Cyprus.
/facetious mode

It might do them some good in terms of diplomacy, but if Russia really wanted to invade Georgia I'm not sure EU membership would help them that much. The EU isn't a military organisation like NATO

...and yet a non EU member was Ukraines biggest supporter whilst Germany held up an EU response worrying about gas..

It isn't yet. But it will be in the future. If they were to join NATO then they would get invaded before it could be completed. But joining the EU is more achievable and the EU will probably have its own armed forces in the future.

I'm no expert on sanctions but its ridiculous to suggest that the UK government is not being tough on Russia.

He would. A NATO member less likely but I’m sure he will test that at some point.

Has anyone seen any specific reasons for countries to want to rush EU applications?

My only take is that they assume it will make succession to NATO faster/easier (they would likely get EU funding and most of the EU is of course also NATO)

If there was an EU army (ooops a load of Brexiters just wetted their panties sorry!) then it would make sense to want to rush EU membership.
