I might be wrong because it was a while ago, but he was hardly everybodies favourite uncle either.

No that was Hassan Rouhani (Iran nuclear deal + appeal to the West, was betrayed by Trump and now the conservatives are back in control). Ahmadinejad was in before and was considered a hardliner.

Iran was beautiful and advanced. They found oil and the Oligarchs moved in, combine with the west-east clash and Iran is having to rebuild itself. It's almost identical to Ukraine.
 
Here's a thought - BBC are reporting on their news site that the US are considering funding Ukrainians with seized assets from oligarchs. If they're hoping for an inner circle style revolt, that's a risky strategy, as it might end up solidifying their feelings. Granted, they can afford it and if anything happens with the seized asset it's quite right to put it back into Ukraine, but if they themselves have done nothing, it might increase further resentment against the west, rather than Putin.

An interesting idea, but risky.

Or maybe it’s not paranoid? After all, the killing of people in eastern Ukraine has continued despite the the Minsk agreement. Putin is fed up with ethnic Russians being killed in that area and nothing being done about it which is why we are where we are.

Just rumors and speculation at the moment, Haas have denyed that report. However, I do suspect this will be the outcome in the end if he cant stump up the cash.

I can see both sides of the argument. Yes it is affecting innocent Russian people. But they are representing the Russian state, not representing themselves as individuals. They aren't being banned for being Russian. The country they are representing is being banned.
