Hey,

My poor old PC is starting to be shown up by some of the more modern games and I'm looking to drop some new hardware in the case but I'm so out of the loop I'm not sure what's good these days! I'm currently running the aforementioned CPU and:

mITX mobo
16GB RAM
1080Ti
m2 SSD
Standard SSD
Mechanical storage drive

I've got my eyes on a case already (Lian Li O11D) but unsure of the best CPU/Mobo/RAM combo to support my 1080Ti. I'm also looking to go back to an ATX motherboard as things are getting a little cramped/warm in my old case.

Worth going for 32GB RAM? With a new CPU will the 1080Ti become the new bottleneck? (Driving dual 1440p screens for what it's worth!)

Any advice would be appreciated!

The 'budget' option is a 12400F or 5600 non-x, which would do fine with a 1080 Ti. At that point, it would end up the bottleneck, yes. If you're planning to do a high-end upgrade in the future, I'd consider the 5800X3D or a 12700, but if you can afford to wait there will be a new generation of CPUs out by the end of the year.

32GB is a no-brainer at current prices, what speed is the memory you have now?

Do you have a budget? as lots of possibilities out there.

The 011D Evo cases below are the new cases from Lian Li, and would be my choice over the dynamic case. if you sdo want, you can vertically mount the gpu with some additional bits sold seperately, or reverse the case if you want it on the left side of the desk with glass facing you.
My basket at OcUK:

Total: £439.97 (includes delivery: £0.00)

If going intel, go 12th gen alderlake. I'd pair it with a Z690 board which will give you pcie5 gpu slot, and 3/4 nvme slots for storage. With DDR5 still expensive and little benefit over DDR4 in games, still go DDR4 mobo/ram route. it'll also take 13th gen cpu's from end this year. you'll want a pcie gen 3 or 4 for storage, as this will benefit in future as more games implement directstorage. I went 32gb on my build last year, though you could get away with 16gb if just gaming. I'd just rather have too much than too little.

With AMD dropping prices of existing lineup, they're also a contender again. the AM4 platform is at end of life so to speak with AM5 platform being launched end of this year, but for gaming a good B550 board has pciegen4 gpu slot, 2 nvme slots (1 gen4, 1 gen3) and boards are cheaper than intel equivalents. 5000 series cpu's are still good for gaming, though intel has them beat in productivity side of things. for gaming and if you have the money the 5800X3D cpu just released on preorder for £410 beats the 12900K intel chip in gaming (was one reason the 12900ks was released, though that costs £750), while also using less power and runs cooler...

If just gaming and you want a cpu as fast as you can get(for gaming), then below is on offer as a bundle for £539, so you're getting the mobo for £120, which is pretty good

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £669.98 (includes delivery: £0.00)

I'd prob pair with something like below. The Rm850 comes with 10yrs warranty and can easily handle 3080 level gpu. If you're going to wait till next gen gpu and planning on geeting something like a 4090, that has (from rumours) a 600W power rating, so would recommend going up a bit, such as a 1000W (RM1000X for £159.99)

again the below is on offer away, with psu at £92.99, and you can get 32gb Corsair Vengeance RGB RT 3600C16 for £143.88 so £252.97...or same ram as below for £218.68..(but it's the SL version, which is the lower profile version)
My basket at OcUK:

Total: £269.98 (includes delivery: £0.00)

I'd go 360mm aio if putting in a 011d (whichever version you go for), best bang for buck being arctic below, but have a look. lian li galahad/cosair h150i/ek/nzxt to name a few all sell popular aio's too..prices fluctuate a lot so search around..only a couple weeks ago you could have got the h150i elite for £130, now £180...
My basket at OcUK:

Total: £204.98 (includes delivery: £0.00)

Fans again subjective...as a lian li case(I'm assuming a case like that you're looking at a little rgb), if you want ease of install, the AL or SL uni fans are daisychainable, but cheaper fansare readily available.

My basket at OcUK:

For storage, as games are getting bigger, I'd go for at least 2tb..you could go for a gen4 such as the 1tb crucial P5P as your OS, and a gen3 such as the 1tb SN750 for games, or just a 2tb single...seen the firecuda 2tb 520 for £220

Total: £196.98 (includes delivery: £0.00)

you could save cash, dropping to a 5600X for £210 and a MSI B550 gaming edge for £150, a 5700X for £269 if you want 8 cores

sure someone put an intel build in, haven't checked thread yet...

I might trim down the AIO from 360 to 280 for compatibility reasons but that’s pretty solid.

12600 or 12700 are seriously powerful for the money. 12900 is silly.

Hes looking at the Lian Li 011 evo (just didnt add it to my build post) so a 360 will fit no problem in the side verticle position.

You'd probably be better off selling your whole M-ITX system as is (or parting it out if you can be bothered), and starting fresh, including dumping the now frankly great but ancient GTX 1080Ti. GPU prices are falling weekly, and it seems pointless spending a good chunk of change on a new system, when you could get a decent amount for your current card still, and buy something like a 3060Ti, or 3070 and take advantage of RT and DLSS etc. for not much more, or if you are sensible with component selection then not a lot at all.

12400f/B660/32GB DDR4 or a 5600/B550/32GB will be with in £50 of each other and both have upgrade options if you want to stick with them, the B660 system arguably is more future proofed, but I can't see a 13700K being much better than the 5800X3D which would be what you could max out the B550 board with would be for games. Either than or suck it up, and wait for a Zen4 in 2H '22.

Thanks all!

Gone ahead and picked up a 5800X and assorted gear as largely laid out above. Would have got the 5800X3D but it's still pre-order only.

Graphics card isn't an option at this point as it's being financed by someone else and there are limits to their generosity ;)
