I'm a bit out of the loop regarding what is the current best buy for a budget system. I'm building a general non gaming system for a mate. Budget of between £300 and £400. He has a monitor, keyboard etc, so just the box. Any suggestions? I'm guessing maybe an i3 based system?

Your budget is not really aimed at new components and you should be looking for second hand. Hard to get cheap mobos for the good value intel chips so is all a balancing act.

Here is a build that is just in budget and is about as low as you can go.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £412.56 (includes delivery: £11.70)

You need a bigger budget to get within 12th series or Ryzen

For an office PC with an i3, H510 (10th gen) or H610 (12th gen) motherboards are fine, which should help keep costs down. H510 are available for < £65, H610 for < £75.

There are compact PCs based on Ryzen APUs like the 4650G, 4350G. Also OEMs like ASRock deskmini, Gigabyte Brix and Intel NUCs.

Won't cost a lot more to get the 12100F, worth it imo

The F doesn't have a GPU, so he'd need a spare gt 710 or something.

I have a spare GPU he can have if he pays shipping. It’s a 5770 (I think).

Many thanks for that. Pretty much what I was looking for.

One thing to note about the Intel chips is the stock cooler they come with are total garbage. You can pick up any lga 1200 cooler and they will be far quieter and out perform it. The case I picked can fit just about any cooler so not a problem what you go for.

When you are looking at the more budget orientated mobos you just need to be certain it has the features and connectivety you require. For example that mobo has DVI-D and HDMI video output , if you require something else it is not for you.

No point getting a super cheap board if you have to spend £50 on add on cards to give it the functionality you need. You just need a check list of requirements and find a mobo that does what you need it too.
