Would you report drink driving?

I drove a 40 mile round trip late on Saturday to pick my GF up from a party and witnessed a couple of bad near misses by what I assumed to be drink drivers.

First incident: Audi A5 comes speeding up a slip road an inch off the back of another driver before immediately swerving over to the fast lane almost taking someone else out(standard Audi?). I was behind the car for a few miles and they couldn't hold a straight line, swerving, breaking, slowing down, speeding up. Eventually the car appeared to miss its junction and swerved late from the fast lane over to the slip almost taking 3 cars out. Scary stuff to witness. The Audi appeared to have a single occupant who wasn't wiggling around in the drivers seat as if distracted but it was dark so I could be wrong.

Second incident: Volvo XC performing the same antics albeit less erratically. Couldn't hold a straight line on the road, ocassionally speeding up, slowing down and breaking. The Volvo overtook a couple of vans in the slow lane, one of which proceeded to pull out behind the Volvo(not having been witness to their antics) to perform an overtake of the van infront. The Volvo immediately slammed on the breaks causing an unbelievable near miss. I managed to pull up alongside them at this point to see what the driver was on, my shock when we realised it was a respectable looking single male occupant, hands in the 10 and 2 position, no phone in sight, just a zoned out stare and an inability to hold the car straight.

There's no certainty that they were both drunk or high but if I was a betting man...

It got me thinking, would you report such incidents? My conscious would have gotten the better of me if both drivers caused serious collisions.

yes

i was following one vehicle when i was on my way to work (around 5am) and he couldn't keep a straight line, so i followed him and reported him using my hands free, up to a point they had the details etc.

would i do it again ? of course i would

If you're calling the Po Po you dont have to be hands free.

]And yes 100% wouldnt hesitate.`

Absolutely. I have done a few times and one of the times the police turned up moments later and pulled the guy. Don’t know the outcome but they didn’t hang about.

The most recent occurrence actually turned out to be a medical episode. An old guy in a Golf almost took out an Espace with a whole family in it, head-on, both cars doing 60+. As I was calling it in, he stopped in the middle of the road, car in neutral, foot to the floor bouncing it off the limiter. I ran up to the car and pulled the keys out. As I was evaluating whether or not to punch him, it became apparent that he wasn’t well. He couldn’t understand why his car wasn’t moving even though he was revving it. Turned out he was diabetic and his sugars were too low. The ambulance crew who attended said it happens fairly regularly and the patients have little to no awareness of what they are doing. Absolutely lethal.

Would be great if you have dashcam footage just to speed up the process.

Check these people's reactions when the law was just about to be implemented:

What about the drunk pedestrians? Hahaha

100% yes, they are a serious danger to everyone else and I wouldn't hesitate to take the keys off someone who was in a pub and attempting to drive.

I have done before and will happily do so again. Not many things about driving offences bother me, but drink drivers are ******* scum. Personally, my feelings are that any **** found guilty of driving over the prescribed limit should automatically receive a custodial sentence, lose their licence and be banned from ever holding one again.

Yes, why wouldn’t you?

My question was more around the circumstances ie would you phone 999 if you had a hunch that someone was under the influence on the motorway.

I wouldn't hesitate if I witnessed someone jumping into the car after a night in the pub, thankfully I’ve not been in that position.
