Range Rovers in general seem to garner quite polarising views these days, more than most other cars imo. What’s with that?

You don’t have to be a ‘tuber or a drug dealer to drive/want one, so are the negative reactions just down to spite, because they are seen as obtaining a certain level of success? (whatever that maybe).

Back in the day it wasn’t uncommon to see them in use by country/farming types. Rugged, comfortable and practical. That’s why my folks had them anyway.

I’ve always fancied an SVR model, it sounds epic and I just like RRs in general. Just for fun I was interested in how Motors perceives RRS ownership. Boy done good, or ‘got any gear, mate?’

I think the problem has always been with their reliability, although I've never understood the SVR. It's a fast SUV.....but why? It's the same with the Urus....I don't really understand the concept.

It's like putting a 1.0 ecoboost in a ferrari, why? Why put a massive gas guzzling engine in an SUV. I've never seen one doing laps round silverstone (here comes the inevitable youtube video :D).

Huge engines in sports cars and grand tourers sure, but SUVs? I dunno

Well @TheOracle Lamborghini would disagree. The sales figures for the Urus are double that of the Huracan. It's there best selling vehicle. Some people are buying them :D

Me I'd rather the Aventador but can see the appeal. Sadly around here most SVRs seem to be stolen.

Must be crazy to buy one of these right now, with LR's poor reliability and current fuel prices.

Also the ICE ban coming ever closer it will become harder and harder to sell on a "sporty" SUV thing.

Personally I'd want a grandad spec car if anything, autobiography FFRR with wood and cream everywhere. For me the big problem with RR in general is an equivalent X5 is 10-20% cheaper and let's be honest a bit better.

Had a D300 Velar for 3.5 years, moaned about it constantly, particularly the tech. For example the screen would randomly not pop up or completely reset mid-journey causing the fear that the entire car was going to black out.

In terms of overall reliability, never missed a beat so I'm not sure modern RR's are plagued with the same issues past models were.

Would I get another RR? I'm afraid yes. At some point in future(depending on prices at the pump etc) I'd get a Sport or full fat RR but only ran alongside something else.

Why, despite all the moaning would I put myself through it? They are great at what they do and no equivalent car has that commanding feel.

Personally I like the combination of higher seating position, plenty of space, comfy seats and effortless engine power - especially on the roads today you can disconnect a bit from some of the BS, stupid roadworks, stupid layouts, etc. (not in a not paying attention way). That only goes up to a point though it doesn't take crazy big engines to achieve that.

The problem with RR's is that as soon as you sit in the drivers seat you think your better than everybody else.

Well i did

lol
Big engines in SUV's are ace... The feeling of being in something the size of the avg London house that can hit 60 in 4 secs is crazy

I've never really understood the Sport - it is pretty awful compared to the "proper" Range Rover. As for the SVR - meh. They sound ace but that's pretty much where the awesomeness stops for me. If you want a Range Rover, get a full fat one with a decent spec instead of the SVR and waft about in one of the best luxury cars ever.

I love a good old Range Rover and the sport. Have also admired them. The SVR is a awesome sounding machine.

Would I buy one second hand, no the reliability of them is awful. Sense talking and working with some ex JLR engineers I would only buy one new and make sure it has a excellent warranty on it. So I will never own one.

I think they are hideous overpriced status symbols and are generally have terrible reliability.

I remember when I had a car finance job for a bit speaking to a dealer who only sold them, and even he was telling me how terrible he thought they were.

I like the idea of them personally but never been that gone on the LR/RRs not to mention everyone I know who owns one always seems to be fixing something on them... plus around where I live they cost a bomb to insure as they get stolen in 2 seconds flat if your back is turned - despite overall low crime, etc.

Part of it is because if you put a small or underpowered engine in a large SUV, they're often really horrible to drive (as anyone who has driven an old TD6 Range Rover will confirm). It's not going to be that economical anyway due to the dimensions and aerodynamics, so you might as well sacrifice a few MPG for decent performance.

I know I probably represent a very small minority of the population, but in my case nothing else would suit my requirements apart from a powerful SUV. I live down a dirt road and a typical week for me involves long, fast motorway journeys, light off roading, and carrying large objects. I've had 2 Range Rover Sports and 1 full size Range Rover and while I'd have no issues swapping to something like an X5 or Cayenne, I couldn't have something "normal" as my only car.

My "opinion":
- As a vehicle, utterly pointless. Need something for genuine off road, get a proper SUV that can be easily washed down without worrying about chipping alloys or damaging the walnut burr. Need a luxury car, buy one, not something that's absolutely compromised to give it off road capability, that's then thrown away with low profile road tyres.
- Reliability of them seems to be terrible
- They seem to be driven by the top level of the "entitled", i.e. those who think that speed limits are "negotiable", that they should always be in the right hand lane, even when they're on a 2 way road, don't understand the concept of sensible braking distances, park just wherever they damn like, and consider it their "right" to try to intimidate other drivers

Yep

In the last few months I’ve witnessed SVR drivers doing the following

- Jumping a queue of 5 cars at a 3-way roadwork red traffic light, because they couldn’t wait for the next green [where are the police when you need them]
- Bullying someone who had been waiting for a parking space out of it, by edging forward and revving loudly
- Most days on the school pickup - SVR stops at red light, revs loudly and speeds off into the distance at easily over speed [20mph zone], to impress the 10 year olds :D
- Numerous undertakes on dual carriageways / motorways because they deserve to be in front

Everytime I see one on the road it’s only a matter of time before they do something completely annoying or stupid.

It’s just unnecessary; everyone can already see you’ve overpaid for a useless off-roader and performance car.

One of the reasons I like driving my pickup - it isn't foolproof but the experience when it comes to stuff like that is significantly different to when I'm in a hatchback or mid-size crossover. I'd say over 80% of drivers who are normally like that are a lot more cautious when encountering a semi-murdered out pickup.

EDIT: Though the tailgating can still be a problem - but don't tend to get the aggressive kind tailgating more people who are just stupid.
