Energy Prices (Strictly NO referrals!)

We just noticed that for one of our meters there had been no reading submitted for just over a year, last reading was by provider in Sept 2021.

Anyway went to submit, and oddly the night rate hasn’t moved at all .. exactly the same as the last reading over a year ago which doesn’t really make any sense. Any ideas what could cause this? The day rate has increased normally (although about 3000kWh higher than the estimates)
Ouch, those 3000kWh are going to hurt at todays rate! Thats equivilent to an entire year of usage for my household

Are you on an economy 7 tariff, if not the meter was probably changed to single tariff at some point. Usually when a property goes from storage heaters to gas central heating.

It’s a “Business Flex” tariff as it’s not a residential property, but it does have different prices for night / day use.

Might not be that bad because the estimates on night usage are 2000kwh over, so overall it’s out 1500kwh in total

There's no load on the night meter, are you sure it's got a consumer unit connected to it, as it sounds like it doesn't.

I've been trying to keep up with this thread but didn't see anything mentioned from British Gas, their website says this in case anyone else hadn't seen it, not sure how that affects standing charge though (I assume it doesn't)

If you’re currently on one of our fixed-rate tariffs that are priced above the Energy Price Guarantee, we'll automatically discount your unit rates from 1st October. If the discount does not bring you in line with Energy Price Guarantee, we'll switch you automatically to our standard variable tariff to ensure you're on the best deal. We'll take care of everything and will be in touch over the next few weeks to confirm exactly what this means for you.
You can still switch to our standard variable tariff now without paying exit fees.

Had an email from EonNext saying I need to reduce my direct debit to £90 but then on my account it's saying I need to increase it to £165. Assuming the email is incorrect..

Will need to have a look. Looking at the history for manual readings / provider readings the night number was always changing up until the last visit where it stopped. Nothing should have changed otherwise

Is it a digital meter?

Only 2 reasons I can think of:

1. The main switch has tripped on the associated consumer unit

2. The meter is broken (highly unlikely)

For anyone trying to figure out what they will paying, this MSE link to the regional cap rates might be useful. I have found it after getting fed up waiting to hear from OFTM and wanting to budget for next month. Looks like I will be about £50 better off than my last expected increase at about £390 per month (before the £400 reduction is accounted for).

Edit: I just realised I keep forgetting that my existing tariff ends after Oct 1st, so I actually get one more more at my old rate of £189, that actually feels like a win compared to when I started paying it :(

Why are the prices set on a regional basis?

Its a historic thing really, the electricity "Boards" were all regional and privatised in a similar manner, I suspect at one point it made sense but given a huge amount of renewable energy is generated in Scotland and transferred across the UK it seems very unfair that Scottish users have to pay the highest distribution/standing charge.
Gas tends to be static because its was always handled nationally.

the posted new edf ecoonomy 7 price list epitomises regional variation - wind makes off peak power in e.anglia cheap until they put in the new supergrid,
need to get an ev if you live there

Got my leccy statement from Eon Next. I’m £60 in credit.

Some of the credit is due to being on holiday. Only leccy on was fridge/freezer, Sky Q. Plus dad coming round to shampoo the carpets.

I'd built up a credit balance of £1200 quid, partially to stop me spending it and partially in case no support came from the Government. Now that the support has happened I'm waiting on getting £975 back and putting that towards the batteries I've just bought, now to investigate moving onto a tariff that does cheap off peak, the shake up with E7 tariff rates gives me something else to investigate. No EV but will be looking into Bulb and Octopus as well as E7.

Quick question really aimed @Zenduri . Any idea when eonNext will launch their NextDrive tariff? I'm on Online v9 tariff, fixed at 27.7p/kWh until Feb. I've had batteries installed this year, so am thinking I'd really benefit from some cheap overnight electricity to charge them this winter when they won't get charged by solar. I dont actually have a EV car so not sure about switching to Bulb/Octopus and losing my current good tariff as I cant prove I have an EV in order to get onto their cheaper overnight tariffs, so was hoping to stay with Eon and guarantee I'm switching straight onto a nice cheap overnight Drive/E7 tariff.

Just got off the phone with Octopus who confirm my tarriff is this going forward from October:

Electricity
Unit 50.09 per Kwh
Standing charge 48.29 per Kwh

Gas
Unit 14.63 per Kwh
Standing Charge 26.84 Per Kwh

Our usage is high so this equates to £385 a month.
I still think the tariff above is too high compared to what it should be, especially with it being the tracker tarriff. Seems there's nothing else I can do other than complain as I don't think new suppliers are taking on.
Feel like an idiot for having a direct debit set up that's for sure.
