It's just occured to me that we may be completing on a house in the next 4 weeks and we don't actually own a sofa (renting in a furnished flat).

I've had a quick scan through places like DFS and Next and can see most of them are quoting 10-12-15 week lead times for sofas.

Do any of the big national outfits ever carry any of these items in stock or are there particular retailers who can supply one in substantially less time (under 4 weeks ideally)?
I don't fancy spending Christmas in our new home without a proper sofa, that would be a killer.

Pretty standard I think you’ll find with most places. Camping chairs and bean bags will have to do for now :)

Alternative of course is getting something 2nd hand off of FB marketplace or something similar. Rent a van and you can get it much quicker.

Where are you? There are places dotted about called things like 'Famous Brand Furniture' or 'Top Secret Furniture' - that type of thing. What they actually do is sell stock from the places you've been to which is last season, or which was ordered then returned.

It'll be a bit more hit and miss. But if you find something you like at one of them, you can likely get it delivered the next day. And it'll be cheaper.

I was hoping that wasn't the case. Urrrgggghhhhh! I did give FB a thought and will be my last option if we can't find one somewhere.

Ikea might be a shout
That is a good shout actually. I've just seen they are doing 10-20% off their sofas atm if you have one of their Ikea club cards too which is a decent bit of discount and the couple I looked at where available to be delivered within a week so thats positive. Will need to go to store though and give them a test though first but they're a decent option I guess.

South Wales. Ill give them a google. I'm not averse to scoping out any of those places, but like you said its going to be a real mixed bag and have to hope you get lucky!

Don't rush fella. Slum it for as long as you can to learn the space. Grab some blow up chairs and stick a blanket over.

Also, check eBay for "Loaf". They are super well made and often come up for sale if you aren't crazy picky.

I got a leather sofa off Very. Came within a week. Very pleased with it too.

Not all are in stock but it will say pre Christmas delivery if they are.

Have a jumbo bean bag and rocking chair ready to go, just want to get something boxed off sooner rather than later.

Nice tip on Loaf. I do love their sofas but brand new they are way over budget for me, however Ebay does look to be a bit more reasonably priced. Will give it a scan.

It's ridiculous the wait times for a sofa. I was told it was to do with how things are pretty much "made to order" in the various materials available and layout (left hand/right hand for corner sofas), and then to ensure they rinse you for the maximum profit, they like to ship large numbers of orders over on the same container from China or wherever. When we were looking it was not unusual to walk round stores with sofas over 5k... for. a. sofa. I mean... Classic UK really. We are charged high prices with 12 week wait times coz we keep them in business accepting this as the norm.

I remember having a casual glance at a loaf near us. If I bought a sofa from there, no-one would ever be sitting on it!

I got our last sofa from eBay. A new John Lewis one for about half store price. Suspect JL sells off cancelled orders to third parties, who stick them on the bay.

Funny thing that - years back I knew a couple who were really into their home decor, and spent literally months finding the right sofa. they reckoned that South Wales was a Mecca for sofas, and travelled there from near Manchester to visit various manufacturers there to make sure they were getting exactly what they wanted.

this anecdote is largely useless to you, as I don't know them any more, and have no idea of the names of the manufacturers they visited. Sorry.

But definitely might be worth googling for independent furniture stores in your area.
